In Hearts of Iron 4, when two weak forces fight, one quickly gains dominance and overruns the other.* This is the opposite of reality, as best indicated by the Syrian civil war, where most weeks go by with advances measured in kilometers.
There were, however, plenty of World War 2 era spots that fit this too, the most notable being the thirty months of fighting in and around Madrid which played a key part in the Spanish Civil War. Although slightly before the time period, the Encirclement Campaigns form a great example where the unprofessional armies of Nationalist China took years to crush the even less professional armies of the Chinese Soviet Republic.
The question is, why is this the case in game when it's not in reality, and how could the game be changed so that weak forces are much better against defending against other weak forces?
*Note that a strong force failing to overcome another strong but entrenched force is not what I'm talking about; the problem is the game is unrealistic with weak forces.
