It has been like 6 versions of the game since I've seen AI defender of faith, the position is always vacant, is it just me or am I not paying enough attention?

There was a time that they picked up the mantle almost every game. A lot of players hated it and the logic was changed. I think the issue was tags were taking it instead of using those funds on more important stuff. I don’t think I’ve seen the AI take it once since.

It made the game basically unplayable as a non-Catholic minor in Europe tbh. A good example of an AI change that made the AI superior at the cost of the game being generally less fun IMO.

They messed with the logic of AI taking it. Before Emperor it was fine.

Before 1.30 - AI get DotF sometimes
1.30 - AI take DotF always when they have money, even just after losing it.
After 1.30 - AI never takes DotF

I started during the days of constant DoF, and constantly watching out for the brief moments where someone lost it was really annoying. Joining the reformation was even worse than it is now, because it meant inviting an extra GP into most of your potential wars. And the Ottomans were constantly defending the Maghreb from the Iberians and all the steppes from Muscovy, and whichever of Spain/France/Commonwealth was doing best would be protecting the others from any Muslims.

Yeah, some middle ground would be better then what we have right now. (Even if I also hated when the Ottos took it, and protects every worthless emirate...)

They don't? Thank god. It's one of the worst bully mechanics in the whole game. I've had Ottomans interfere in Indian conquests because of it. It's not like Henry the 8th - a Defender of the Faith - rushed to the aid of Vienna against the Ottomans.

Wait, did they change DotF back to applying worldwide instead of only on your home continent or something?

Hm? Did ottomans lose Constantinople?

No but the spanish did join a tonne of wars between catholics and protestants, like the war over cologne

Should've been mamlukes defending maghreb, which would also cockblock portugese expansion into africa

They had a geopolitic interest in the region at the time due to being of the Habsburg dynasty and owning land in the Low Countries, and Holy Roman Emperor for essentially the first half of the 1500s. If Spain hadn't owned half of Europe at the time, I'm not so sure they would've bothered with religious squabbles in Germany.

Considering Ottomans are considered Europe and DoF only defends same continent defendants, I'd be surprised.

DoF in general added an extra layer of difficulty. I'm kind of sad they didn't keep the 1.30 rules for hard or hardest difficulty.

No this is post Charles V when no longer emperor

It was removed for the AI since 1.31 because in 1.30 the AI would keep spamming it extremely early (earliest I've seen was 1450), even taking loans to do so or taking it while being heavyily indebted, resulting in an extremely tedious early game while playing as hussite Boehmia, fetishists, coptic, protestant or reformed HRE minors most of the times.
While completely removing it out of the equation is not an ideal solution, I'm glad it's disabled as more than often it just causes too many ridiculous things like muslim nations that don't even have a navy defending Brunei, Castille defending Bosnia from Serbia or Mamluks defending muslim countries on the other side of Africa they don't even have the knowledge of.
Ideally it should be reworked to only work between great powers and have a distance modifier.

I think its fine it isn't a part of the game. Every time I noticed the feature (from AI) it was some BS. Some things are better left to human players alone.
