Why does the Pope never seem to spend his gold...

Historically they bought plenty of favors and mercs. Seems like weak AI. Also my enemies (fellow Doux) should NOT be caught out at the end of the war I win against them with 400 coins AND in my prison... that coin should have been spent on mercs or something to fight me off.

Any AI hope on this?

I think that Paradox will greatly expand on the Pope's role with a Papal DLC of some kind within the next year. Perhaps there will be new ways to lighten the Pope's treasury then.

If you give them land won through a crusade they will use their substantial money hoard to max out the buildings in their holdings. As for mercs other than the holy orders they are pretty stingy, silver-lining being that it ensures that even during a lengthy crusade other countries will still be able to purchase mercs which would otherwise have been snapped up by the papacy.

Because he's a Bishop and therefore can actually hold Temples himself, while he would get a wrong type of holding malus from Castles

But he does, he always gets the most expensive mercenary company whenever he's in war and fully upgrades all his demesne right away.

He doesn't spend it because the Renaissance doesn't occur until the 1400s! They're just saving all that sweet, sweet cash to spend on artists and architects for their walls and temples.
