Why do we love EU Rome?

I got the idea for this thread from the EUIII forum, but I think it'd be a good idea to bring some positives back to the Rome forum. Let's not dwell on negatives in this thread, let's just say why we love EU Rome!

1) The time period the game covers. I'm fascinated by the period covered in EU Rome. Reading or hearing about some of the personalities, wars, battles, lives and feats achieved during this time is almost like something from fantasy.

2) The ability to roleplay. I love seeing various characters blossom and develop their own unique personalities. Seeing a best friends turn on you and launch a civil war can be a painful experience or watching your ruler bring in a golden era for your nation can be so rewarding.

So why do you love EU Rome?

3) Different styles of play. A Kingom is way different from a Republic or a Tribe.

I like EU Rome because it shows the human impact on rising tribes,kingdoms, empires via charaters who have different traits that can either be a positive bonus or a negative one in either diplomacy, battles, research and at the national leader level(King,Queen,Consul, Emperor) that still holds true today.
History shows despite the change in technology through the ages, humans still have the basic needs that affect their country's fortunes(ambition for power, greed, bravery, cowardice,etc). As Russell Crowe said as the Roman General in the opening battle scene as he addressed his men, "What we do Today will Echo for an Eternity". Another reason the city of Rome is known as the "Eternal City". Yes, I love EU Rome for these reasons because the emphasis on the human impact on history.

Emperor's points would be my main reasons too. In addition, I enjoy playing Rome more than other titles because the kind of things that you have to manage and be worried of are pretty different than in other strategic games, giving a very unique feeling to the gameplay experience.

This 'uniqueness' is IMHO one of the main assets of EU:R, and something that should be better exploited in the future, based in the 'uniqueness' of the time period it covers: its unique warfare and campaigning, unique ethnical and cultural landscape, visual power (look at Osprey ot similar publications drawings and posters, they are visually gorgeous), unrepeatable political scenario (republics, post-diadochi hellenic kingdoms with their antagonistic ambitions, mythical tribes...)... etc

I also love EU Rome because no two games are the same. Of course, the countries all start in the same place with the same gold, manpower, etc. but the moment a new friendship is formed, a new marriage or child is born, the game begins travelling upon it's own unique timeline. Begin a new game and you'll not get the same experience.

I like the way you nudge your characters in different directions throughout the game's history. Maybe you murdered the wife of a senator, who then remarried your own daughter, who then gave birth to a great general who would eventually overthrow the government. The game carries a nice butterfly effect.

I love how the game limits what you can do. Want to make peace? Too bad, no-one in your senate is supporting it except those damned populists...

I love how it immerses you into the Historical time period. I'm seeing what happened historically actually unfold in the game. And some nice twists also that are unexpected. Its also fun to read these forum posts and find people that enjoy the same things I do. Such as books on Rome and those awesome Osprey Art works.

It might sound bad, but my favorite part of Rome is turning a Republic into a Dictatorship. I like the feeling I get when I realize that the ruler I've been nurturing for a year or two now has absolute power, able to oust his rivals and destroy protestors.

2. Character orientedness (I like how they all have amibition they want fullfilled)

And then you come to realise he has a nitwit for a son, so your dynasty is going to be doomed very soon.... :rofl:

Because it is a relatively cheap game wich atleast has given me many long hours of fun? Also, I love history and I truthfully didn't know much about ancient history (damned school just goes like "well well there was Rome and Ceasar and then it was an Empire that fell to Barbarians. Some Greeks were around too, now let's jump to medieval history") before I tried this game, so I was interested from take-of.

Other than that, it is a good game with a very nice modding community.

1. i love the historical time
2. it's easy to learn/hard to master... perfect formula, i don't want to spend hours learning (HoIs) a game and i don't like micromanagement (i.e. provincial decisions)
3. the dynasty/character feature makes for great immersion and makes every game different
4. graphics are nice
5. there is a good gameplay balance among the major powers
6. civil wars

Surely this is a drawback?

I love the period, and study it, but EU:Rome doesn't reflect the period well.

Nevertheless, I enjoy Rome because I can leave it on in the background when I'm working and click a button every once in a while.
