Why do uprisings after absolutionism no longer feel like a threat at all?

You'd think that with the idea of nationalism becoming a thing a bit later would make people wanna rise up and have their own independent state but by that point cores are long gone and any uprising is just a 9k army which is trivial for you to vanquish repeatedly.

EU4 is a game about snowballing. Even if not going hard on expansion you are gathering buffs and bonuses to your nation. By age of absolutism you will have gained so many plus all the ideas that are in play.

Theres a reason most players stop by that time.

Meiou had a "religious nationalism" modifier last I played where if you were Catholic, and got a long conquered province flip protestant, they'd get seperatism again.
Seeing how few nationalist revolts there were or succeeded in period, I'd prefer to not have 101 "national awakenings" events that add cores of ireland to ireland, and instead just leaving it to unrest forming in provinces of wrong culture

Uprisings don't feel like a threat for 99% of the game, it's not just after absolutism.

If you want an uprising that really feels like a threat though, get big, don't culture convert anything, then get like 300% overextension. You'll be drowning in rebels.

The French Revolution was a major watershed in the history of European nationalism. Until 1789, revolts by one ethnic-cultural group against another were rare and almost always with different motives (usually religion) behind them, later reinterpreted as nationalist by nineteenth-century historians.

Reminds me of my aragon to roman empire run once you get to imperialism and rack up those amounts of overextension.

Simple fix:

Rebels from all factions should rise up all at once, and only once their combined strength is 120% of your force limit. And have them enter logical "alliances", so maybe nationalist rebels move to help peasants, or pretenders move to reinforce noble rebels.

Gameplay post-1600 isn't intended to be realistic or balanced, it's just a way for paradox to appease the WC achievement hunters who can't be happy unless it's easy to "beat" the game.

Because as many have stated on these boards in the past when this topic comes up:

EU4 models the external pressures that states/rulers faced during this time period very well - expand or die.
How you expand can be determined by your geographic location, temperament, and personal goals, but if you don't you're going to get wrecked.

EU4 models the internal pressures that states/rulers faced during this time period very badly - once a tag gets large/powerful enough it just can't fall without the player making concerted and repeated pushes.

I did a jewish run recently and took Jerusalem which gives you a decision to destroy the mosque there and infuriate every muslim in the world ... so I decided 'screw it' and took the decision. All my muslim allies ditched me immediately and I got, I think it was 6k rebels in every single muslim province which was about 1/2 of the empire. I had about 10 armies so I was never really under threat, but I ended up losing 2 to the zorg rebels who would stack on top of each other as they were so dense and my overconfidence and lack of escape routes through former allies lead to their annihilation. It was ... great! like easily the most fun I've had with rebels in this game pretty much ever. So for me, I'd say rarer but more massive rebellions might be a way to make them more interesting mid/late game.

Was this a mod? Can't see paradox putting that in base game

It’s from one of the DLC’s, Cradle of Civilization perhaps? Where Paradox expanded and rejiggered a lot of faith mechanics.

One of the faiths that was fleshed out was the Jews and if a Jewish faith tag controls Jerusalem they have a decision to rebuild the Temple that costs like 10k ducats, gives every Islamic tag a -200 relations modifier, and massive unrest in any Islamic province you control.

I forget what bonuses you get but while they were substantial, I didn’t think they were worth the price, nor necessary for my run.

yeah I was at the point in the run where I'd done everything I wanted to, so I thought I'd take the silly option just to see what happened. Probably the unexpected size of the revolt also made it a bit more fun - when you know what's coming, you can plan and prepare - when you have to react on the fly, it's more interesting.

People are making all kinds of serious points in this thread, but I'd like to say that I love the idea of "absolutionism".

(The idea that the sale of indulgences might still be a driving force in the world in the 17th century is actually very in keeping with the alt-history nature of EU4. Maybe this is from a timeline where the Pope formed the Kingdom of God?)
