real talk here, you can have a planet with 10 unemployed, all robot pops, and start getting unemployment and crime related events.

Why do robots care? How do mindless drones do crime? They don't have feelings! No moral compass! They have one purpose: GET BACK ON THE GALACTIC MARKET AND MAKE ME MONEY.

edit:

Basic robots and droids do not have free will, they are programmed to perform a job function. Just because the DROIDS/BASIC BOTS are unemployed does not mean the EMPLOYED biological population will cause them to cause deviancy. There is no logical argument for that, and its a heavy handed nerf to already weak droid nations, especially ones who ARN'T evolving into synths and who are perfectly comfortable robo modding their billions of robots to do all the worker jobs, selling excess robots on the galactic market
They have no concept of society as large and would logically be placed into storage due to lack of need. How does this result in unemployment? Why do crime events happen because of excess robots on a planet?

The game should differentiate between not sentient and sentient robots, droids and basic worker pops should be placed as "inactive" and not cause the negative effects related to unemployment and crime. Period. Surplus droids, if anything, is a market surplus due to insufficient demand.

Even a robot has to eat (sort of). They are not going to get recharged for free.

Just to be sure, we are talking about robots or droids in a "normal" empire here, right? No robot empire, no Synths?

Gestalt consciousness empires should not have crime imo. The only downside to unemployed robots that you should have is the upkeep, but even then as someone suggested realistically they could just be turned off and put into storage if they are not working. So maybe the only real cost should be housing/storage.

Also, can we sell our unemployed robots on the market as a machine empire? From what I understand the answer is no. It seems realistic that a non-killer robot empire would export some of its surplus advanced machinery to those willing to pay a price.

Crime in gestalt empires is rebranded as "deviancy", which is why I assume that the OP is talking about robot workers in a normal empire. I haven't really played machine empires in 2.2 so I don't know much about how it works but the tooltip doesn't mention anything about unemployed pops raising it.

Ok I just started up a test game and used the console to radically increase the number of pops on a machine empire planet and they did cause the deviancy to skyrocket, so yes unemployment(or underutilization?) does cause it. I suppose that it could be explained by idle machines having too much time on their hands and beginning to develop their own thought patterns? Though your point about them being logically shut down when not in use still applies.

The ability to sell unused robot pops would be a good idea too.

yep.

My techno-monarchy is well established on the back of billions of worker drones allowing them to lead lavish education focused life styles.
AND THE DRONES ARE COMPLAINING THEY DONT HAVE JOBS AND ARE CAUSING CRIME.
THEY DONT EVEN HAVE FREE WILL.

In a machine empire, crime from unemployed robots might actually be justifiable. It depends whether the machine empire is just one consciousness working through different drones, or myriad minds linked. Deviancy and such support the later, and they might resent being shut down, going to lengths to avoid such a fate, criminal lengths that is. Heck, the negative effects of crime could even be less robots stealing for their own pleasure, but deliberately working poorly or even sabotaging work to create an artificial need for them so they won't be shut down.

There's a possible argument in what klopkr said above, having large levels of "inventory" laying around in warehouses can lead to theft, either from people breaking in to steal them or from corrupt workers selling them on the side while fudging the numbers. Of course this shouldn't cause nearly the same level of crime as an unemployed biological pop would.

Isn't this a bug they mentioned fixing a while back? I remember because it was one of those humorous patch notes something along the lines of "Unemployed robots no longer increase crime, we'll miss you serial killer claw machine."

Without gainful employment your robots are vulnerable, they fall in with a bad crowd, and before you know it the only place where they can find purpose are street gangs and organized crimes. I've seen it before and it isn't pretty.

giphy.gif

I would assume that gestalts that are not doing something actively have a higher chance of deviancy.

Gestalts don't get unemployment. They have a 'scavenger' job with very poor returns that populations will do automatically if no other work.
