Why do my Lords towers seem to stop at three?

I find that after I have spawned three lords from my lords tower, I can no longer choose the spawn lord option.

Is there a reason why this might be?

No matter how much money I have, and - it seems - how much time I wait, three seems to be the limit.

I have already killed the dragon and the ogre, so am making my way through the advanced quests at a decent clip.

You can get as many Lords as there are missions.

However you can only hire 3 per mission. And they keep the progression they made during that mission (unless they are dead at the end).

Is there a real use to "Lords" anyway? By the time one can afford these guys the units you build early are usually at a equal level anyway, and getting them to actually do guests is extremely expensive.
IMO this "feature" could have been left out.

There's uses for lords if you think outside of the box. Instead of selecting your best hero at the end of every quest try to pick only high level rogues, rangers, or warriors. These classes are very cheap and will allow you to start a quest with some high level heroes. Or, select some low level temple heroes to be your lords. Imagine being able to recruit a paladin or priestess without upgrading your palace. At low level they will be affordable and very powerful. Even at level 1 a Paladin can handle the beginning of almost every quest by himself. I'm sure other people have different strategies but these are the two I use most.

Real use? No. Lords are unjustified in SP.
Whatever you can do with lords, you can do without and most of the times much better.

High end lords become available when the heroes are close to the same levels or high level enough not to justify a lord (not much difference in terms of survival capability between a level 15 hero and a level 45 hero)

Low end lords drag on the economy at a time when you mostly rely on the market and the forge to recycle your money. Level 7 and upper heroes (lords) tend to use much less health potions and stuff as they need them much less. Therefore low end lords slow down the economy.

No justification for the lords as they are in no mission life savers.

But you can developp challenges with them as somebody offers to end the game with three lords plus one hero. Stuff like that.
