Why do AI kings elected emperor destroy their king title.

I've been watching this large AI Holy Roman Empire from afar for a while, It was pretty neat it had two AIs that manged to become kings in it. The hereditary King of Italy finally got himself elected the Holy Roman Emperor and I cheered. Then, like, almost immediately after he destroyed the Kingdom of Italy and gave his duchies to single country counts. If his son loses the election he will will, at most, inherit some counties in Lombardy and Carinthia. All I can do is shake my head. Why, Paradox? Why does the AI do that to itself?

Nobody has any answer to this? I thought someone would spring up right away and explain it's for so and so reason or to balance something. I'm genuinely confused over here.

It's probably intended for AI that form new empires. Alternatively, you could interpret it as the Emperor merging his royal title into the imperial title (as the Kingdoms of Burgundy and Italy were IRL).
