It's not mandatory for life-seeded. If you get the glandular acclimation tech you can make your Gaia preference species have any other planetary preference.

Supposedly the bug is when you terraform to Gaia all special planetary deposits are destroyed but I hear this is fixed in the new beta.

This is actually not true. You cannot change your gaia species preference if they are a life seeded race.

This is actually not true. You cannot change your gaia species preference if they are a life seeded race.
This simply isn't true. You can most definitely change your Gaia World Preference. Hell, I did just that in my Stellar Performance achievement game from Gaia or Ocean because I saw a Sea of Consciousness. You can't change INTO Gaia or Tomb World, but you can change TO the Default 9.

Another thing you can do with Gaia Worlds is Consecrate them if you are a Spiritualist, which gives pretty solid bonuses to Anemities, Unity, and Ethics attraction across your entire Empire. Gaia Worlds give more bonuses than other types of planets.

If you are just into a consecration, you can probably find enough gaia worlds from galaxy generation. A convenient fallen empire will provide you more than you need or can use, and you have other reasons not to colonise those early.

Please, if a spiritualist FE has a consecrated Gaia world nearby, they will NOT object to you claiming the system and consecrating the planet as well. Settling it will probably still enrage them, but I had no issues with co-consecration.
They actually like you more if you agree that that world is holy

I generally like to use Gaia Worlds as Farm Worlds. Mostly for RP reasons, but if you're a slave holder, Gaia Worlds are ideal to bring slave work force from every corner of the galaxy :p

Why have inproductive filthy xenos on your capital and another worlds, when you can have them mildy happy and productive working on one place?

If you play 200 or 400 like I usually do, that's not actually guaranteed. Furthermore, the Holy Worlds can actually end up spawning on the opposite end of the Fallen Empire or on their closed borders.
They actually like you more if you agree that that world is holy
That being said, this is easily the best way to make friends with them.

Wish there were easier ways to tell which bonuses are additive and multiplicative in gameplay, it'd help a lot in decision-making and theory crafting...
