It's a +10% blanket bonus to all production. Ecumenopolis is better, but you can't turn every planet into an Ecumenopolis as you need to get raw materials from somewhere.

100% habitability allows a multi-species empire to employ all its species on the same worlds efficiently.

There's also a small bonus to pop job output on gaia worlds.

In general though, gaia worlds lag behind the other "super-planets" in the current state of the game. Ecumenopoli are immensely powerful industrial/trade centres. Hive and machine worlds give infinite deposits, a bigger pop job output and other bonuses. Gaia worlds have similar requirements, but are currently a lot weaker. That doesn't make them useless, since nothing replicates the function of gaia worlds directly, but they aren't really on the same level.

oh and on the same note, if you're life-seeded it's madatory so that's one reason for gaia terraforming there.

Along with the 10% flat production there is a 10% happiness bonus which will translate into improving your stability and further increasing your production by probably a further 10% or so through the high stability modifier.

For worlds where you have a larger concentration of lower class strata such as agri/mining worlds the happiness bonus is pretty decent if you run living standard policies that don't provide for the lower strata (or slavery). As the stability is based on the pops overall happiness and a higher concentration of lower class strata it can be harder to maximise stability on rural worlds, so chances are changing to gia will help your raw resource output more than the flat 10% listed bonus.

It's not mandatory for life-seeded. If you get the glandular acclimation tech you can make your Gaia preference species have any other planetary preference.

Supposedly the bug is when you terraform to Gaia all special planetary deposits are destroyed but I hear this is fixed in the new beta.

I think it's because terraforming into a gaia world gets rid of planetary features, but I think it's fixed in the newest beta.

Exactly. It is strange how one could come to the impression that other planets are not "on the same level" as ecumenopolises. It's complete apples and oranges.

Ecumenopolises need those bonuses to be competitive. Otherwise they would be completely outperformed by your normal planets, which altogether outproduce the ecumenopolis by a large margin. Including the seldom mentioned fact that without them your empire would falter and die right quick. Gaia terraforming gives ecumenopolis level bonuses to every planet.

Ecumenopolises and megastructures are for those impressed by shiny baubles, Gaia worlds are for kings. Context is what you need to find the function of something.

The main reason to get World Shaper is and always has been that Gaia planets get a 10% multiplicative buff to resource production.

You shouldn't take it right now because Gaia terraforming is bugged - short version is it removes most deposits.

Once that is fixed it should return to being excellent. It might be somewhat worth it for habitability now too, if pop growth keeps working in the bizarre way that it currently does. You might be thinking that it's not worth it for habitability because you can supply CGs and food without issue anyway - but think of it like this: if you can save a large volume of those things then you can sell the excess food on the market and replace some CG factories with forges to get more alloys.

The gaia world bug was apparently fixed in the beta patch.
Wasn't the issue that terraforming to Gaia essentially destroyed all planetary features that only gave a +1 district bonus? Has this indeed been fixed?

I very rarely terraform, basically never to Gaia planets since that I don't get the Ascension perk required. It is definitely beneficial to do, habitability is a big deal and if you play as a xenophile with lots of species it ensures optimal conditions for all of them and a bonus to their output. But I just like variety too much to want to terraform everything. Even if it is to a supposedly perfect paradise of a planet.

In my test branch game I lost plenty of deposits. Granted, I use mods, might have overwritten the fixes with old code.

Gotta get the game into a more working state before starting new vanilla game.

I played an unmodded game (beta patch) yesterday and gaia terraforming is still destructive :(

From what I have heard the Gaia world +1 features were programmed into the 2.2.3 beta but something went wrong with the code that is supposed to get them to appear ingame, so terraforming planets into Gaia worlds is still a buggy affair

Terraforming to Gaia will remove all tile blockers, even if already unlocked. The problem is, that the districts related to those tile blockers are removed, too. So if you have a planet with no districts locked through tile blockers (does that exist?), you should be able to terraform it to Gaia without any issues (I said SHOULD, no guarantees, but that is what I experienced during a few experiments.)

Special deposits are untouched and work after terraforming. This issue seems to be fixed.

The main reason to get World Shaper is and always has been that Gaia planets get a 10% multiplicative buff to resource production.

You shouldn't take it right now because Gaia terraforming is bugged - short version is it removes most deposits.

Once that is fixed it should return to being excellent. It might be somewhat worth it for habitability now too, if pop growth keeps working in the bizarre way that it currently does. You might be thinking that it's not worth it for habitability because you can supply CGs and food without issue anyway - but think of it like this: if you can save a large volume of those things then you can sell the excess food on the market and replace some CG factories with forges to get more alloys.
The bonus isn't multiplicative though, which is a shame.
