I'm playing as the republic of Gotland (vassal republic of the Kingdom of Sweden). I lost the elections on the death of my last character, but was still doing reasonably well and on my way to take the vote on the next election. I managed to gain a county in the meantime using the seize coastline CB, so I am both count and magnate (patrician) of my republic/house. All of a sudden, a couple of years after taking that county, I lose the republic title! All of a sudden, I'm just a count, all my trade posts are gone and all my villages now indicate "wrong holding type"! My family was replaced by a new one in the Gotland republic and I can no longer see the extra republic tab.

I got no message explaining why this happened. I have absolutely no clue why this happened. My county is not landlocked and I've been holding the title for a few years anyways.

Here are a few things that happened around the same time, but I doubt they are related:
- the county I captured was originally tribal and I had just finished converting the tribal holding to a village (it wasn't the capital though)
- the king of Sweden just lost a couple of counties in a war; I'm now a vassal directly under him and no longer under the republic of Visby

Any insight into my situation would be much appreciated!

ye its probably due to the fact that you are no longer vassal of visby republic, since only duke level can be merchant republic, and you are count level,so only a normal republic is possible, which aren't playable

@Raistlin_wizard: Visby's capital hasn't moved and it wasn't affected by the latest war between Sweden and Norway AFAIK.

@tngen: The head of Visby is a Duke. As a count, can't I remain his vassal? Or do I automatically become independent after I seize a county? In other words, can you only seize a county properly if you are the head of the republic?

Thanks!

no you normally continue to be a vassal of the serene doge(duke) but if the duke level republic cases to exist for whatever reason then you stop being a merchant republic.

the guy who is duke of visby now is it still the merchant republic or is he a normal feudal duke?

Visby is still a republic headed by the same Duke level guy. The only thing that's changed as far as I can tell is that my family was replaced with a new one.

This happened about 1 year after I got the count title from conquering my 1st county, and shortly after I converted the tribal holding in that county to a village. I have a saved game just before the switch from republic to feudal happens. Every time I load it up, I invariably lose the republic title after a couple of days. There is no notification at all when this happens.

maybe, since as count outside of visby you were de jury part of another duchy, the king of sweden decided to retract your vassalage from the doge of visby and transfer you to your de jure duke

Hmm. So once I lose the republic, I'm just a count directly under the king. Could the king retract me from the doge of Visby and put me directly under him? If so, it's weird that I don't get a notification.

As suggested, I'll try reporting this as a bug.
