I bought HOI3 and SF a while back and I can't seem to get into it. I want to though because I see it had very interesting concepts but I keep trying to play and get overwhelmed! Nothing makes sense to my very HOI2 oriented brain, especially the command structure. I have tried the tutorials and they really do not give enough information. Can anyone recommend some strategies or even better some kind of guide that can help get me going? Please help!

read a bunch of AARs. its usually a good way to learn how to play. Someone in the know can probably give you a link to some good ones that go into detail. also wasnt there someone who started a series of youtube videos of him playing hoi3 a week or two ago?

also remember you dont have to worry about everything right away when learning, let the ai handle a few windows (tech and espionage perhaps), and hand over ai control to all but one theatre, or all of them etc.

Watch some let's plays of HoI3 on Youtube, most of them talk about what they're doing and why, in the beginning at least.

We all, probably, have the same problem when we first played HOI3. There is so much going on and you just don’t know whets what. Just start with Germany 1936 on a very easy setting and have the AI handle your trade and spies and politics.

The windows, guess you know the basics (playing Germany):

Intelligence:
You can build a max of 10 spies per country. The first three/four months set the mission to counterespionage. The red! tells if there are spies active in your country and when you move the mouse the ! it shows from which countries and on what missions. Missions in green are good, most of the time allies, and in red are bad. If there are more than two countries active set your mission on counterespionage. Otherwise invest in national unity (for as long as possible) or support our party (only before the Anschluss).

Politics:
Not that important. Make sure you pick the right leaders (see hoi wiki) and keep an eye on the popularity of your party. If for example the KPD (communist party) gets a lot bigger than at the start of the scenario, there are communist spies active and you need to go to the intel window. The politics screen is updated every 1st day of the month. Oh, and here you can mobilize your army!!! It takes about a month to mobilize.

Diplomacy:
Important but doesn’t need much attention. Influence one country, not the likely ones like Italy or Japan, but the USA. You wanna keep them out of the war as long as possible. Also get your resources through trade agreements from either Russia or the US. I recommend Russia, convoys to Russia are less likely to be attacked later in the game. Don’t invest too much money in oil, it will sort it self out.

Tech:
This is one of the most important screens. The four sliders, technology, spies, diplomacy and officers, determine how you invest you leadership.
Spies: create 10 spies in your country asap than lower it to 2.11 or 1.91.
Officers: Keep the number on the top right above 100% (140% is the max amount)
Diplomacy: Enough to influence one country plus a little extra (anywhere between 0.1 – 1) to get enough dipl point for trade
Tech: Research techs where the year is equal or lower than the current year. Industry is the most important one (IC eff, supply prod, agriculture). When you wanna research something make sure you gonna use it. Don’t research super heavy battle ships if they are not gonna be constructed.

Production:
At the start of each 1936, no matter which country, your army is gonna be upgraded. Set the upgrades slider to the amount needed. Most of your units will be upgraded after 2-3 months. Do the same for reinforcements and consumer supplies. With the left over start constructing (see wiki for tactics).

Everything else you need to figure out yourself ;) coz that’s the fun of the game :) and most of it is on wiki anyway ;) Good luck

You can also download/print off the reference guides found above and use the wiki. If you can't find answers to tough questions after that than these forums are a great place to search and/or ask for answers.

Also, don't be afraid to ditch a game and restart it. It took me a few games before I finally finished one because I kept learning from my misakes and wanted a fresh start.

The USA is a fun country to learn with as well since you can make a ton of mistakes and it normally won't ruin a game with all the resources, IC and leadership at your disposal.

Or start with the US, very easy and a lot of room for mistakes. It also gives the benfit that you have 4-5 years to get familiar with the screens before going to war.

As a private in McClellan's army once remarked: "We drill, then drill, then drill some more."

Play. Play. Read the wiki, and then play some more then read here, then play...

But it is also possible that HOI3 is not for him. I have tried the demos of EU and bought and tried Vicky and just couldn't get into them. I think they are too abstract. I first tried HOI2 and was worried that HOI3 would be too complex. As it is, I think they did a great job with brigades (you can use them but they are really building blocks of divisions) and, for all its faults, the AI can reduce complexity. As ex-military, the command hierarchy is second nature to me and I am one of those players who start a game by rebuilding the hierarchy into one that will be effective for the fighting to come.

My point is that not all games are for everyone. Having said that, all Paradox games have a steep learning curve and it is well worth working through the difficulties if you reach the point of enjoying the game.

Yes, no substitute for actually playing the game to learn it. That said, we do know that parts of the manuals/wiki are now out of date. And, there are three manuals, plus the wiki, plus the forums, plus the AARs. This game is complex enough as it is, without having to decipher which info is the most-recent/correct version. The learning curve is steep here, so if the basic information isn't easily accessible/digestible then that too becomes a deterrent.

I'd suggest reading Uriah's AAR "A Clerk's War" re Germany, and Myth's AAR re Italy "Explorations in Strategy". While both deal with a lot of strategy, and also have a great narrative, they do run through the basics. Also, check out Rensselaer's two AARs.

If feeling overwhelmed, you might try playing a minor to learn things. The USA, UK and USSR all have ginormous empires, which can be hard to just see everything that is going on. Italy and Japan require naval prowess. Spain is a good choice just to fight the Civil War and learn the mechanics of warfare. Finland is also a good choice, as you get the Winter War early on. Remember though, the goal is just to learn things -- so don't be discouraged if the Soviets own you.

As mentioned above, Germany is actually a good choice in that you have enough resources/leadership/IC to experiment, do a bit of everything, make mistakes, and still get things done.

Thanks for all the great advice guys! And yes HOI3 IS for me. I have been going through some AAR's and the Wiki's and I think I am starting to get it a little bit more. It still is all very overwhelming at first but when I think you boil it down it becomes a lot more simple. Now the major thing I need to figure out is how to not let this game ruin my school career....

It is a very daunting game to learn at first and it took me a few days to get the hang of it. (and i'm still learning new things) Basicly what every one else has said, read the wiki etc. I had wiki open while i was playing and when i got stuck i read what was in the wiki and got some advise from ppl in the forum also. It will be a challange at first but it is ver rewarding when u do finaly work out what your doing and conqure your first county :)
