Why can't I join my wife's war?

Given that I'm married to her, we should obviously be allies. I'm a Duke, and I married her, pressed her claim and now she's an independent Duchess. She is under attack by the King of England, who is in a war with her, pressing a claim for her entire Duchy. That would obviously ruin my son's legacy... What do I do?

That sounds strange, although it has never happened to me. If she is your direct vassal you can't get involved in her wars but since she is an independent of equal rank I don't see why you don't have an alliance with her. You aren't a direct vassal of the King of England by chance are you?

I am the Byzantine Emperor. I married the Queen of Hungary. Soon she was overthown by a claim holder, but I could do nothing. Then my wife was a duchess and declared war to get her crown back, but I still could do nothing. At last she was imprisoned for all her life. Because she has a claim on Hungrary crown, I can't ransom her.

I had dreamed for getting Hungary for my eldest son, but he was educated as a Catholic by my wife. And before my wife got imprisoned, she gave me a son born in purple. In order to let my new little heir get all his titles and prevent my eldest become a Catholic king of many big kingdoms, I have to make my eldest son into a bishop. He could be an Emperor and get a new kingdom. Why couldn't I join my wife's war

I think some wars are those that you can't join and they can't ask you to join.

To the OP, if you are a vassal of someone you can only call on your allies who are a vassal of the same person.

I know it doesn't always have to do with vassalization. Playing as the King of Wales, married to the Queen of Scotland, I was repeatedly unable to assist her with rebellious dukes. This included an excommunication war. Not being able to march to her aid was annoying, to put it mildly.

This says it all. It might be worth noting that if memory serves correctly, she can still call you to war. So you could just place your troops in a perfect position to strike the enemy quickly when she requests your aid.

To be accurate, I was a vassal to the HRE, she was independent.

I fought my way out of this one in the dumbest way possible.

Given that I was Holland, I had loads of money (I built exclusively harbors and trade stuff, coupled by a few castle villages and rest of the +tax buildings), I was able to hire loads of mercs. The king of England was excommunicated, so I went to war with him on the grounds of his religious transgressions, used my troops to bash his troops in my wife's lands, until he asked (I guess that's what happened) for piece with my wife.
The exc war ended as he died, but by then my wife had ~70% of war score against him given that she held the land they were fighting for unoccupied by him for a hefty amount of time...

All was well in this case, though I still think it should be tweaked somehow...

One of possible cases coulds be:

You are currently in war and allied with somebody, who if you join your wife war will become your enemy or hostile. Most of wars blocked by this couse, as you are not permitted to chanle your allience in war time.

Since you are a vassel of someone else, you are not allowed to be called to war. You can only go to war if you have the same liege.
