This is super frustrating. I'm just getting back into EU4 after not having played it since release. (Thanks Humble deal!) I am playing as Spain & have New Spain set up in Mexico, but it keeps getting attacked by natives & I have absolutely no way to enter the war, so it keeps getting its territories taken over. I had it up to like 10-12 provinces, then it gets beat up & knocked back down to 2 provinces, all while I have a 20k stack sitting there but nothing for them to do.

What is the purpose of this mechanic? Why can we not defend our CNs? What am I missing? Were the devs just trying to make colonalism not be fun? Is there a mod I can install that will get rid of this stupidity?

I've seen responses saying that you can use Enforce Peace on the natives. I've also seen people saying to just declare war on the natives to kill their armies so your colonial nation can fight back.

How exactly did you manage to have a truce with them while your colonial nation does now?

It is possible if the colonial nation formed during the truce. Subjects have their own truces. Although these tend to be identical to those of the overlord, due to them typically being involved in the same wars, but that is not necessarily the case. For example, a vassalized nation will keep its old truces, while a newly released or formed nation will not have any truces. Except for colonial nations, declaring war on a subject will bring in the overlord automatically brings in the overlords, and subjects generally can not declare war, so that is generally a moot point, except in the case of colonial nations not having a truce with a given nation while the overlord does.

Yes, the CN formed while I already had the truce.

Super frustrating to say the least. I just kept sitting there thinking how ridiculous & completely immersion breaking it is to have 20k troops stationed right there that literally cant do squat to protect their own people who had recently immigrated.....

Saw this exact thing happen on stream once and I'm gonna tell you the same thing I told them, just eat the AE and stab hit and truce break. It's not the ideal solution, but it does work.

You can't enforce peace because you cant declare war on the attacker? Yeah I guess you just have to truce break which may honestly probably not be worth doing. This happened to me with the Australian tribes once, my cn always gets owned there, I think the aboriginal tribes are way more powerful than they should be historically. They can basically match me in military tech when they should have sticks lol

Cant do either, I have a truce with their attacker.
you can still enforce peace on behalf of your subject even if you have a truce with the attacker or are not meeting the opinion requirements, so its working differently than the normal enforce peace option. only case i encountered where i couldnt enforce peace was when i was in a regency council.

1-Colonial nation
2-Independant colonial nation
3-Native
4-Reformed native
5-European colonizer

Which one declaring war on a colonial power will rope in the motherland?

Just 5?

Also, I've said it before, but I'll say it again: Subsidize your CN's until they get up on their feet. It really helps them quite a bit, as early CN's generally tend to have a lot of wrong culture, wrong religion, low-development land, which doesn't make for a great income base. Subsidizing them with 5, 10 ducats a month really does make a huge difference.

One of the issues that I’ve seen posted about frequently is that they are being declared on at formation. I don’t know how much subsidies would help. I agree that subsidizing is a good way to build up your colonies.

Oh, for sure. Colonial nations should inherit truces from their overlord, but I'm not sure if EU4's code can easily handle that. I'm gonna guess no, as it's not a thing presently, which is a huge shame. It's more general advice, though - I see many posts about established colonies being mauled by natives or other colonies, as well.
