Ok so until mwo large laser was red and blue was small.
All those PC games.....it was proper.

So why after all this time was it changed?

What makes one proper and the other not?

Honestly, it serves no purpose except providing a visual shortcut to the observer to let them determine what was fired.

On the electromagnetic spectrum, when regarding the thin sliver that is visible light, red is lowest energy, green is about middle and blue is highest energy.

So technically, the laser colour is an indication of the energy output of the beam.

Fun fact, for a given definition of 'fun' - ultraviolet light (i.e blue light) is more damaging to skin than infrared (red). It's the higher energy of the 'blue' that makes it carcinogenic.

Source: In a past life I studied Chemistry for four years and you'd be suprised how much electromagnetism comes up.

Then HBS was right about using blue for Large Laser Shots and green for Mediums. :D

Blue Lasers...Red Lasers...Does it matter? 'Knowing' is the most important part when it comes to 'The Battle'.

actually....MWO made the change....HBS just followed suit.

What makes one proper and the other not?

Honestly, it serves no purpose except providing a visual shortcut to the observer to let them determine what was fired.

proper as in thats how its been done since battletech like forever...as far as i can recall...every pc game from CHI until MWO did it that way.
literature mostly supported it that way.
more of a curiosity thing then anything else....i made my lasers the right colors(for me in my little world) in my games.

On the electromagnetic spectrum, when regarding the thin sliver that is visible light, red is lowest energy, green is about middle and blue is highest energy.

So technically, the laser colour is an indication of the energy output of the beam.

always thought red was for large as it has the longest wavelength
(arrangement of colors of based on decreasing wavelength: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo , Violet)

but what what i can recall from physics class 40 odd years ago color really doesnt matter its the Watts of the laser that does.

Wavelength is inversely proportional to frequency. Frequency is directly proportional to energy (E=hf). Longer wavelengths like red have lower energy.

Wattage is power (energy/time). But yes, the main thing is going to be how much power you put into the laser (barring certain wavelength-specific effects, which probably don't matter here).

And they just look cool. :)

On a serious note, without knowing the technicals you just posted I always thought of it in terms of a fire. A fire with red/yellow flames has the lowest heat, and the fire with blue/white flames is the hottest, while a fire with green flames is in between. It does kind of work out that way in game as Small Lasers are Red, Medium Lasers are Green, and Large Lasers are blue.

Red Lasers, blue lasers, pink, purple, yellow and green lasers......whats it matter? I only care if stuff dies on the other end of the beam.

That´s for the Difference of weight you build in. If all had the same coulor you wouldn´t know what laseres you build in, esp. if you build up your Mechs fast and don´t look in the Battle what Lasers you have.

So the different Coulurs show you that: Light-Laser (Red), Standard-Lasers, most Mediums (Green) and Heavy-Lasers (Blue). Mostly you build in a variation of them, and use them at medium to short ranges together if the fireposition is good.

im sure someone could mod that sound to pulse lasers.
though now all im hearing in my head is claptrap every time a pulse laser fires.

You didnt already hear that? Did you not play MWO? They sound just like that already in that game.
