Why are there so many female rulers in Hispania and Britain?

When looking over nations to play I noticed there seems to be a lot of female rulers in Hispania and Britain. Is this a historical thing or were they placed as characters to fill random nations? I don't have any problem with it I'm just surprised.

Ha! I was actually going to see if anyone had posted about this. It's an interesting detail, I think, and I believe it to be fairly accurate actually. Would be interesting to hear a professional historian chip in with their knowledge.

Celtic women certainly enjoyed better rights than their greco-roman counterparts. The problem here is that we are missing so much data about the pre-roman celtic societies, what the romans wrote about them was that they held a traditionally subservient role, but they almost certainly held authority in religious duty, as regents or as advisors. We also have legendary examples of ruling celtic women (I think everyone knows about Boudicca). The definitive answer though? Impossible to tell.

To me personally, the genders are just portrait flavor, no reason to fret over something that is most likely a complete breeze to mod, if that honestly bothers you.

From what I know, women rulers many times were wives and mothers who took the power in difficult times or when the male ruler was weak or dead. In my opinion their presence it's a little artificially expanded by the devs, and the proof is the fact that the only way to customize the game as relase are the gender rules and not other options. It's a choiche. I'm not here to say anything more than that, I describe only about what I see. I'm not against the possibility to have female rulers at all, to be clear, but have option too have them as generals and admirals, it's a little telling.

I personally think that having a gender rule option for a game, especially one where the historicity is so vague, is the perfect solution. If you don't like a particular setup, simply change it, i believe that honestly leaves everyone happy.
