I saw in the map editor dev diary that it will be compulsory to place a motorway to connect the map to the outside world

What if I want to create a remote map which will ne be developped enough for motorways? Actually this is what I want to start with. Just a 2 lanes regular road which will connect to the outside world

Why is this not possible?

I agree! Or even just a train line or ship connection. Having a huge highway in my city seems very "modern-centric" =)

Hopefully in the future they develop more DLC which allows for historical cities, historical development etc.. Much like in Simcity4 you could turn on different building styles so you can start with the 1890 set and advance to the 2000 set. This was a great feature and should be expanded on a bunch!

but you can delete the highways in-game as long as you also then build at least one road connection out of the map.

Think of it as CXL, only with pre-built highways, that you can destroy if you don't like it and build your own road connection, but you must have at least one road connection, which totally does make sense

Seeing the map editor, I'm confident that you can have a small highway in the far border (not playable ground) and quickly change it into a smaller road to reach the playable area.

Don't even worry about that. If it is not possible to do that initially, then mods will fix it.

Considering the game takes place in the future, I don't have a problem with it in that regard. But it would be nice if it was possible to only need one type of outside connection.

yes, but then WHY having to delete them ? Why not start directly with a normal road?
they didn't explain that.

Maybe it's to give a helping hand to the newbie who might start to suffer economically mid-game because he/she did not connect his city properly with highways in advance. I don't know... im just guessing.

You can delete the highways going through your city to replace them with roads, but the connection going outside your city will remain a highway as its outside of the build area. It's something you'll just have to live with for now. The simulation will require these outside connections to run correctly as imports of people and resources are necessary. Hopefully this limitation will be overcome in the future so we can build cities that are entirely self-sufficient but don't hold your breath. Remember this game is technically a lot more complex than say SC4 where residents would appear out of nowhere and could live on facilities which ran on imaginary resources.

For the love of god,YES you can delete highways IN your building area. you CANT delete anything that is outside your tiles.SO no you CANT delete the highway.

What he is asking is to be able to start a map with just 2 line road instead of highway across the map. THE WHOLE MAP, not just the starting tile.

And i absolutely agree with that. I dont want to start all fancy shmancy. I want to start small and go big. At least i want to have the freedom to choose how i want my map to be, instead of being forced to have highway as a default.

Same as, what if i want to have a island map? Is that even possible since there must be a road connection from outside.

Highways deliver the first citizens to your cities, so it is a must to start. Without connecting to the highway, your zones will never develop. From what I got.

Sure it would be great to have historical cities, but they have different mechanics than a modern city. With this engine they could possibly some time in the future make a whole new game called Cities: History or something like it :p. But definitely enough effort for a separate game.

Modding is nice, but too much of it ends up in a very inconsistent gameplay, because there are no centric design decisions made (unless a single person or group made 100% of the mods). Much rather get an official variation of gameplay when it's too big :) willing to pay for it, of course.

With an island, you should be able to connect to the outside world using any transportation system. If you want a bridge, fine. No? How about a ferry? Tunnel? Airport? Train station? Any and all of these options should be available.
