That's the question. Is there any historical basis for them being shiite? Plus it sucks to have all wrong religion provinces playing as them and your stab costs skyrocket. Were they really shiite or Paradox just made them so for a more difficult gameplay? I've really never seen that in any history books I've read...

I can't really find anything that specifies whether they were Sunni or Shiite when they converted, but is is the Ottoman Empire, so logically I think they would be Shiite.
I don't quite follow the logic

I don't know how relevant this is, but the Fatimids were Shi'ite. Maybe either
A: The Mamluks converted to Shi'ite when they took over Egypt
or
B: Paradox accidentally gave Mameluks the Fatimid religion

?????????? ??????????

The Mamluk's were Sunni. They conducted campaigns against Shiites and Druze in Syria. It must be a gameplay balance, as there are certain periods when the Mamluk empire must be unstable. AGC/EEP achieves this through more events.

Mamluks were caucasian in origin, and rather than stripping them of arabic culture Paradox opted to give them wrong religion. It also ensures bad relations and CBs between OE and Mamluks, which is historical.

The mameluks as they are in the beginning of the game did not fight for the Ottomans. They started out as slave soldiers fighting for (IIRC) the Ayubid dynasty. In time they started to run the country untill the Ottomans conquered them. After that they did serve the Ottomans.

Still, they're Sunni in AGCEEP, so I'm thinking both Ambassador and movtiv-8 are right on this, they're Shiite for more balance reasons, and to cause bad relations between them and the OE.
Yes but in AGCEEP they only get Caucasian culture instead.

The idea seems to have been to give the Ottomans a CB on them, and so an excuse to conquer them, as they did historically. It also weakens the Mamlukes by making all their provinces wrong religion. They were definitely Sunni in reality, even claiming to be protecting the surviving Caliph until 1517. The vanilla AI Ottoman Empire almost never attacks them anyway, though, and if they do half their provinces have been converted to Shi'a Islam and the Ottomans must then waste money converting them back.

Yeah that's very bad. They should really get more revolt events balance the game, not have shiite state religion. BTW, they always suck in my games even when fighting Nubia.

That's what you get when you refuse to use firearms.
