Why am I fighting this war?

I'm currently playing my first Ironman as Austria, and as emperor I was dragged into a war to defend the empire against Denmark, who are attempting to conquer Stade, currently controlled by The Hansa. The thing is, The Hansa isn't even a part of the war.

The War Goal is to take Stade, which isn't mine. How can I end a war that is about a province that isn't even mine to give up? Why isn't The Hansa in the war? As this occured right when I was in the middle of fighting Hungary, my troops were very stretched. I was hoping the danish would be busy with The Hansa long enough to recuperate, but since I'm the only one fighting, the whole Kalmar Union just went straight to Austria and starting to siege everything I have.

How can Hansa peaces out if they are the target of a wargoal?

Seriously, I think this is a bug. It makes no sense.

No, Tuscany is my vassal and only in the war because of me.

doesnt look very likely, its only 1459, tuscany isnt in northern italy and there is about a 1% chance they took land from naples while they are still under PU aragon. The hansa has five provinces so unlikely that Tuscany became war leader.

Have any you of you considered that Stade (the country) could have been annexed by The Hansa in another war soon after DoW? Check to see if The Hansa owned the province at the time of DoW.

Probably this. I had a similar situation happen when playing as Hansa. I declared war on Bremen and was sieging Stade. Denmark declared war on Bremen and moved the troops in. Austria came to defense of Bremen against aggression from outside the HRE. I annexed Stade, but Austria and Denmark were still at war. It's a pretty uncommon situation, but maybe there should be some code which allows for automatic White Peace if another party annexes the war goal province/s.

Yes, this appears to be the case. Stade was annexed by the Hansa on April 4th, 1498. I guess this was just a bug then. Kind of sucks to run into a bug that literally destroyed my army, just a few hours into my first Ironman..

Yes I agree, you should be allowed to unconditional white peace in the event that the war goal is no longer obtainable. If Stade had remained the war leader the war would have ended immediately upon The Hansa's annexation of Stade.

Just sit in your mountains and wait for the whitepeace. They won't ever control the wargoal either.

He said his army got destroyed. If this happened after a war with a major power, then the Kalmar Union forces can just march through the HRE, eating attrition and sieging Austrian provinces. In HRE wars you have access through the provinces.

No, but they did siege all my provinces. In the end, I was lucky. An event gave me 400 ducats, which apparently was enough for the danes to agree on a peace.
