To be honest, I think the only problem that really Portugal has, is problem with Liberty Desire, because weak Portugal can't keep army and land big enough to counter it and it makes Brazil almost always go independent in every single game I play, very often by the end of 1550. I tried to play mega Portugal colonization game myself, but Liberty Desire is just awful.

Portugal could perhaps do with another province and a bit more development since the rest of Iberia got quite a few new provinces over the last patches.

They're hardly massively underpowered though.
Portugal could definitly use an extra Province or 2, since Castile & Aragon got new ones too. But don't forget, that AI Portugal usually blobs a lot better into Morocco than AI Castile. Maybe because they start with a land border and better ruler?
Also, historically Portugal only colonized Brazil. They always do way better in the game already.

Plus a bunch of trade ports in Africa and Asia, and Angola and Mozambique.

In my experience Portugal always gets way more of the African coast than they did historically leaving very little for the other powers. Do they really need a buff in that regard?

Portugal is overpowered. I hate them. Why are they a lucky nation? They sat in the shadow of the Spanish Empire, smacking about some foreign island states and randomly strolling armies around Ethiopia. And in-game, they colonize the Carribean, South America, Mesoamerica, parts of North America, South Africa, Australia, Phillipines and Siberia. And they conquer North Africa. And becomes the Holy Roman Emperor.

Both Portugal and Spain declined over time which is not represented at all in Eu4.

These nations was way weaker in real life compared to their historical counterparts, they are maybe the two most boosted major nations in the game.

Welcome to "the decline of Iberia and the rise of Great Britain can't be represented without some internal mechanics". Would you like something to eat?

That is true and I have suggested such mechanics before such as factions that will take control of your country as you grow larger such as janissaries did in Ottoman empire and thus caused its decline.

Atleast we can start with nerfing long term dominance of trade somewhat so things like Neatherland taking over Portugal trade can happen instead of Portugal using its early advantage to dominate the late game.

of all the Iberian countries, I don't know why you're complaining about Portugal, after all it looks to me that Granada is still in the same relative position it was before...
Remember this is a country that maintained it's independence until an Iberian Wedding, a revolt at home, and allies not showing up, caused it to fall.... if i remember my history correctly....
you want a weaker relative Spain, remove Castile's Cores on Granada, make them fight to get the country. I've always found it annoying that Castile has Cores on Granada, the Ottomans on the Turkish Beyliks, and France on English Held providences for over 200 years...(ones without Costimopolitan as the main Culture.)

Are you kidding me? Portugal nerfed? All because some trade node got moved? Please, Portugal is still a colonial power house and can beat up anyone outside of Europe with ease. Just because you lost a few ducats in 1444 doesn't make Portugal weak.

You still have your butt buddy Spain helping you essentially all the time, and lets not mention how easy it is for you to colonize and take home that New World gold.

It's about damn time the Iberians got a slight nerf. Always hogging all the colonies and forgetting that Europe existed. Give me a break, Portugal is still strong.

Okay, Portugal does not need a buff and is very powerful in-game, but that's just ridiculous.

Portugal OTL controlled the trade between Europe and Asia. Do you know what that Asia includes? India and Indonesia. The Portuguese crown did not control massive territories, yet their budget was absolutely huge. The comparable state to Portugal's situation is the Netherlands, which also grew to be very powerful but did not suffer the kind of stagnation Portugal suffered, which was thanks to their PU under Spain, that gained them some enemies. Previously, the Dutch and Portuguese were trading partners.

Then they colonized large parts of coastal Africa, led the exploration around Africa, gained contact and trading rights in Japan, possessed one of the richer colonies in the New World, with diverse production capacity. (Cycles of Brazilwood, sugar, coffee and even production of cotton and tobacco, and then a massive amount of gold discovered in the 18th century)

You can argue that they need a nerf or something, but stating that they "sat in the shadow of the Spanish Empire, smacking about some foreign island states and randomly strolling armies around Ethiopia." and did little of note just shows a very clear lack of understanding about basic early European colonial history. The kind of income they get from trade is pretty historical, it's just the lack of competition and no way to cause a decline (Short of taking their CNs out of them) that are ahistorical!

@OP - By no means has Portugal been nerfed in 1.12. The claim that making Sevilla feed Genoa is a noticeable nerf to Portugal is, frankly, hilarious.

They're so underpowered that you had to come up with a 'Historical Friends' modifier so it wouldn't be annexed by Castile before 1500.

I don't especially like them Either, especially all the alliances they tend to end up with..... lets ally with Castile, Aragon, and England... or better yet France and Spain And England (they did the second on in a Gelre to Netherlands campaign... which i gave up when i got swamped by the French over a Portuguese Colonial War...one my colonies started so MY allies couldn't join... but by gods lets have France Steamroll your lands alongside Spain While England crushes your navy)...
And in Wars they start and you're their ally, they try to make you do all the work.... Oh Thank you big brother Castile for Fighting those Morroccan Armies for me, i couldn't have conquered it without you... no no i am perfectly fine sitting here in Lisbon watching you do the work for me.
For me... it's the old saying: Don't Hit me for being a jerk, or i'll call my big Brothers to attack you.... all three of them at once... or more... to me Portugal has the little Bratty Brother Bully Complex...

But then the Bratty bro Bully thing happens a lot in EU IV and sometimes even backfires with Large Coalitions, I've seen France be steamrolled by a dozen or more Minors because he kept backing Some Italian State as it accumulated huge AE in multiple Wars.

They're so underpowered that you had to come up with a 'Historical Friends' modifier so it wouldn't be annexed by Castile before 1500.
Oh you mean like the Historical Enemies makes it so the Malmuks and the Timurids WONT ally and the Ottomans can steamroll all over the First and then once the border is in place, the second

You know it was a civil war, don´t you? It was not a war between Portugal and Castille, but a war between Portugal + castillian nobles vs castillian nobles + Aragon.

Also Portugal lost the war.
Not true. It was a win for all peace deal. Portugal withdrew their claims to the castlian throne, and Castile was obligated to not sail, explore, or trade south of the Canary Islands. That's why the sea route to India was prohibited to Castile and made them try to get there sailing west.
If you want to be condescendent, first learn what you're talking about.
