What's an esso?

An Irish petrol station.

Although in this case people are referring to a place George RR Martin created for his Song of Ice and Fire series. By all accounts it is good, but on the other hand it is no Big Wahoonie.

I have to say I'm really looking forward to this and think it could take this game to another level.

The reason for this is the greater inter-dynasty rivalry. If you are a Duke within the HRE then sometimes the Kaiser will revoke a county if he doesn't like you but generally he is happy for you to expand as he then also expands. With republics though it is more a zero sum game. Suppose you are the Pisan Doge and the French declare an embargo war against you. The trade posts are owned by a rival family.

Do you a) fight the war for the good of the republic
b) Surrender, screwing over the rival family but risking letting Genoa muscle in.

The challenge for each Dogeship will be to fix any mess left by the AI, expand your interests and damage rival families and Republics as quickly as possible before your character dies. It will be interesting to see how good the AI is at doing this.
