I personally think its important because this shows that paradox will allow us to play "none-noble" characters. This means that there is hope for future Theocracy DLC, or pagan DLC.
I hope they don't hardcore republics so modders can open up a whole new type of government, but alas they probably will.
Since trade posts can only be made on coasts, having an inland republic would be somewhat crap. Although it would be great for Essos ofcI'm not sure at the moment, apparently we can mod othere republics ( not the big 5, Venice, Pisa, ect) to be playable, but I'm not sure if they have to be coastal.
i'd rather have the ability to have inland republics.
That can easily be modding judging by what information we have about how the upcoming DLC works.
That's what non-nobles are called in CK2. I'm pretty sure that mechanics will be changed to allow Doges their own "dynasties" - the DLC would be pointless otherwise.
I don't know if this was brought up in this topic so far, but did anyone else snicker at the OP calling the nobility of the wealthiest states of this time period "lowborn"?
I hope they could allow switching between republic and feudal.
You will be dissapointed then, because the new Republic DLC is completely ignoring Rus.

I know it ignores Rus republics of Veliky Novgorod and Pskov. Which is shame but I still thing that Republic DLC is more important that expansion of Norse pagans. Its kinda lame still that DLC ingnores inland republics.
In eu3 terms the dlc ignores "noble republics" and only focuses on "merchant republics".Novogorod not how you think a republic is it more like royal common of wealth today but there prince bit more power, and he all came from Rurik.
PI changed their policy. CK2 is the first in their experiment, so no more expansions, but more dlcs.If you ask me, I don't see a reason why do so many people perceive it as important... It will give us an ability to play a basically lowborn family and, only if we're in power (holding the doge title), to control entities weighing a few baronies. Who gives a damn about decorating your family house, and your few shiny coins, if there are empires and religions colliding all over the place?
It's just not grand enough... I hope Paradox will include some new innovation like factions and retinues were, because playing an overly complicated barony just doesn't cut it for me...
Maybe I've omitted something - or am pretty unrealistic, but this following expansion isn't an expansion, but a mere minor DLC.
