If you ask me, I don't see a reason why do so many people perceive it as important... It will give us an ability to play a basically lowborn family and, only if we're in power (holding the doge title), to control entities weighing a few baronies. Who gives a damn about decorating your family house, and your few shiny coins, if there are empires and religions colliding all over the place?

It's just not grand enough... I hope Paradox will include some new innovation like factions and retinues were, because playing an overly complicated barony just doesn't cut it for me...

Maybe I've omitted something - or am pretty unrealistic, but this following expansion isn't an expansion, but a mere minor DLC.
Maybe because there hasn't really been a game ever that has allowed a similar play style.

I.e. It's entirely optional. If you don't play it then it doesn't really do much to you besides "wasting developer time"... and suffice to say, we're not at all in control of that. If PDS wants to make a wife simulator dlc because their wives like it then I'm sure that's what they'll do. Regardless of what the forum says.

Muslim starts can be just as interesting, they're just not focused on by Paradox. Some of my favorites are:

A Sheikh or Emir in Iberia, trying to break free of the Almoravids and establishing your own Sultanate in Iberia.

This, and playing the NW Africans to re-subjugate them. If you skip ahead to 1060-1066 ish, you have a lot in the way but a lot to be done.

the challenge in it, is marrying relatives off to converted territories and building mosques quickly. this way when they are conquered by Christians they can retain some islamic culture and the stupid AI will actually hire them and give them titles now and then, which of course, makes it easy to launch a large scale re-take, incite plots, and unify Iberia.

I would like Pagans, Mongols and as far as republics, i don't know. I just don't know. I would like an option that opposes Christianity, Catholicism and Islam.

Without the benefit of reading all the previous posts, my own excitement about the Republic DLC is simply due to something new. As once-upon-a-time amateur historian (I've forgotten most of the details due to disuse but still have a general gist of things), I just "feel" what kind of feel Pisa, Genoa and Venice (and possibly in this order in some specific time-periods) should have from about 12th century onward. I was missing those megaburghers and I want to hug the republics as they come. :p Well, not really, but if you're stuck with the same rock-paper-and-scissors simplified mechanic of province population being nonexistent, holdings following the same basic pattern everywhere (defined number of slots currently built and still available, three types, simple capital mechanic) with a little variety if you appoint count or duke level ecclesiastic or burgher vassals, then it really is refreshing to see something new.

As for playing as them, why not? I'm probably starting a Republic AAR the day it comes out.

I would like an option that opposes Christianity, Catholicism and Islam.

Well, there is always modding for Pagans, the only issue is that most mods generally just make them playable, without adding much in the way of content, and Christians/Muslims get quite a bit of content that Pagans dont. Mainly Crusades/Jihads (and all the perks/bonuses associated with), Holy Orders, Invasion CB, at least a dozen events, numerous traits, etc. The Warrior cult building is nice, dont get me wrong, but it fails to singlehandedly counterbalance all those other things.

I myself can't wait to create the Republic of England. It will be hard and it will take a long time, PLUS i'll have to cheat a little bit, but i am confident that it will be good. I can even try an AAR with it...
Why England, you might ask. It's because England is the only actual invasion in 1066. (Norwegian invasion is there too but you'll have to fight a second war in Norway for it to be succesfull.)
Ahhh i can't wait till it's 14th of January.

1. Yeah, I get that. But if too few boats are floated, I don't really see a point. Though, I can be all too wrong on how many people are eagerly waiting for this.
2. Indeed, but it's still kind of underachieving... It let's us play families which were up until now called lowborn. Also, as far as I see, it focuses a lot on micromanagement.
3. Isn't the new trade system reserved for republics only? If yes, I wouldn't consider it an innovation, like, for example factions were. Factions applied to everything, and not only to the Byz, which was the object of the LoR DLC.
4. I consider SoI and LoR to be "expansions", as they are much more significant than, for example Songs of the Caliph, or African face pack which I would consider DLCs, cuz they are quite optional, and are there to satisfy tastes, not needs.

4. But whether you consider them to be expansions are not is immaterial, they aren't. Paradox's new policy is no Expansion packs, only optional DLC with free patches. Everything is optional and so are SoI and LoR.

SoI and LoR are very much dlc's, the game is still very much playable without them.

I assume you'll also change the higher titles to "Comrade", "Commissar", "General Secretary" and such? That'd be awesome.:D
Yes with a text editor that's pretty easy to do. I assume the barony, county, duchy, king & emperor for both feudal and republican titles are going to be changed? Even better, the files do allow you to filter for both culture and title type so it'd be easy to make fascist republics be in the game at the same time too. I could make all Italian ones be communist and the rest be fascist or visa versa. If I didn't have to think of any of the titles I could make that mod in about 10 minutes.

Well there were a few cases of Proto-Revolutionary Republics, the early Florentine republic for one, and the Commune of Rome was fairly radical as well.

I remember when I had a republic HRE, with all of the kingdoms consolidated into one rule. Even France was one, but I was busy in the east. That would have been an interesting game if I had the dlc. That is why I'm getting it eventually.

The most interesting bit would be that that holy roman emperor would then proceed to spam trade posts everywhere with his giant amounts of money.

Feudal lords get things to do with the trade system, earning money depending on the trade posts in their territory, embargo wars against merchant republics, selling daughters to patrocians. Granted it's not a lot but you'll get something even if you don't want to play a republic.

Indeed you will, it is even more incentive for feudal lords to get some trade republic vassals. But unlike up to this point, you'll have to think about how to most strategically place them to maximize profit.

I prefer to do less thinking and to simply take out their competition!
