Tbh, I'm still not convinced. This Republic DLC will definately have to proove itself in the tweaks department, and add something completely new gameplay-wise, other than the republic elements. As someone already said, it will be a one time experience which will bore quickly...

And, wow...

Reading back through the can of worms that I opened, I realized how many Hollywood fanboys are out there playing this wonderful game just because of the AGoT series. I for one, who have read all 5 books (yes, the tv series are based on the book, called A Song of Ice and Fire), do love the story, but this game offers so much more. Europe, not Westeros or Essos is where it's at peeps!

Again, maybe I'm the fool here, but I don't get why are people so into the AGoT mod if you go way ahead of the storyline in 30 minutes of gameplay, by which time all the characters you know are dead or changed beyond recognition...

I don't know if this was brought up in this topic so far, but did anyone else snicker at the OP calling the nobility of the wealthiest states of this time period "lowborn"?

I did :p. I think he means of non-nobility. Lowborn is a completely incorrect way of saying it.

That's what non-nobles are called in CK2. I'm pretty sure that mechanics will be changed to allow Doges their own "dynasties" - the DLC would be pointless otherwise.

My hype is here because in the game I always want to become richer and richer, so if I can be a super-rich Doge with no incomes penalties on baronies and cities, it will be awesome. Imagine having Granada, Venice, Constantinople, Genoa in your demesne and owning some personal cities inside these lands. Your balance is gonna skyrocket. I hope there will be new events or decisions to spend all that money.

Otherwise I am a bit disappointed by the very little choice of Merchant Republics at the start. I wonder what happens if a county-level republic like Ancona usurp a duchy. Does it become playable ? Trade would have been great, but very complex for a dynasty-character based game. Although the silk road would have been pretty easy to code (few events + provinces bonus tax modifier that already exists).

I'm sure to buy it, because in multiplayer a Pisa-Genoa-Venice battle for the Mediterrannean sea is gonna be awesome. Genoa will be unstoppable with coastal CB in spain, Venice will have to swallow Ancona and expansd in to Sicily to stand up. Pisa is doomed IMHO if Genoa targets them, but they can do great if they take Napoli and Capua first.

Anyway it will be very fun in multiplayer, and I'm very excited to see the other Developer Diaries to shape my opinion.

I do desire it, i'm just not overly confident about it. Sword of Islam was a flop and so was the Legacy of Rome dlc and both didn't change much at all other than retinues. I believe that the Republic dlc will be better, but how better is the question. People are acting like the game will be forever changed, when not that much will be different. Hopefully some republics will emerge naturally during playtime, but theocracies and non-dlc republics rarely appear anyway.

What the hell? A flop? How? By what standards? SOI was a very successful expansion, not to mention the huge amounts of people who were demanding playable muslims going all the way back to CK1. Paradox made money on it, we got a great expansion that made half the map playable with unique gameplay and a lot of good details.

How on earth was SOI a flop, or Legacy of Rome for that matter?

Its just new age pagans crying for their glorious viking expansion (even when norse were most marginalized pagans in CK2 era). Muslism and ERE were much much more important and good upgrades for game. Pagans DLC is needed but tis mostly needed to flesh out cumans, Mongols and lithuanians. But still Rebuplics and DLC that makes Rus principalities not retarted are more important.

I am not at all enthusiastic about Pagans.

I wanted the Republic DLC, and am very happy with it. This will give a completely new complexion to the game. I hope we get a Catholic DLC which improves the Catholic church mechanics (and makes theocracies playable) after this before we go to the Pagans.

Only problem I have is that I thought it could have expanded on a bit more. Maybe it added deeper trade mechanics, rudimentary naval combat, or other non-merchant republics.

The Republic DLC was disappointing to me when it was said only 5 republics can be played and they have to be coastal. I won't be able to play the Cordoba republic now :(
