If you ask me, I don't see a reason why do so many people perceive it as important... It will give us an ability to play a basically lowborn family and, only if we're in power (holding the doge title), to control entities weighing a few baronies. Who gives a damn about decorating your family house, and your few shiny coins, if there are empires and religions colliding all over the place?

It's just not grand enough... I hope Paradox will include some new innovation like factions and retinues were, because playing an overly complicated barony just doesn't cut it for me...

Maybe I've omitted something - or am pretty unrealistic, but this following expansion isn't an expansion, but a mere minor DLC.

I am excited for republics but its entirely pointless without being able to use ruler designer to create one, considering the puny amount of them which will be in the game. Of course Pdox doesn't want to admit it but the only use for republics is the Game of Thrones mod + some other minor mods. The lack of republics in vanilla will make it a waste of time. I don't want to be wedged in-between the sea and the frugging HRE for the whole game for christ sake! And thats practically 99% of the republics we have in the game!

Others have been begging for republics (as well as pagans and theocracies, but at least we're 1/3 of the way there now) for ages. It does not matter if a few people, such as you, don't desire it when the majority do.

I do desire it, i'm just not overly confident about it. Sword of Islam was a flop and so was the Legacy of Rome dlc and both didn't change much at all other than retinues. I believe that the Republic dlc will be better, but how better is the question. People are acting like the game will be forever changed, when not that much will be different. Hopefully some republics will emerge naturally during playtime, but theocracies and non-dlc republics rarely appear anyway.

I don't regret getting SoI one bit, for my part... and aside from one of the most important states of the timeline (The Papacy) being a theocracy, I see, on average, at least one powerful kingdom turning theocratic during my games. Last time it was Bohemia, before that, it was England. Even if they were rare, though, it irks me when parts of the game are so "in my face" and yet not available (like pagans by default) and even if there is nothing drastic about republican, pagan or theocratic gameplay, DLCs should be released for each of them just so that the game would be complete. Let's hope Republics manages to present something really new, though.

I agree ;P. It is good to have choices for people who really want to play as non-christian/republics/theocracies. I just don't like seeing all these insanely varied portrait types (slavic people really don't look like that in real life for example, same with arabs, and the greeks from the upcoming portrait dlc).
I want some consistency with public demand, atleast paradox is coming around to the concept of it now with this republic dlc. Noone ever wanted a bunch of racial portrait DLCs which don't match up to reality. And did any of the playerbase ever want muslims or slightly refined byzantium more than norse pagans?

You can grant a barony to mayor, making him lord mayor, then grand him dukey, thus making him a Doge, voila, Republic is born.

Yes, I do not care for pagans, they were a remenant of past, that was not dieng fast enough.

So we can all play Essos.

Crafty move on PDS's part - they give the oppertunity to improve a hugely popular mod, and get to make money off of it.

Easilly because they were converting to cristianity from 1 BC, and most converted eventually.

The instances of pagans becoming cristians are very numerous, the instances of important cristians becoming pagans are unknown to me.

What are you getting at, other than that Christianity was awesome in some way?

I was excited about the republic, but the more I hear the less I am. I like to be original in my play-throughs and take my countries in unnusual directions, but with the restrictions on what republics you can play as and what republics you can and cannot create, more and more this is sounding like a one-trick poney. Basically you play Venice *exactly * as youre supposed to play it and after that youre done... Sure you can go play Genoa for the exact same experience, but Id rather try to ussurp the byzantine throne and form a mega byzantine republic, or start as the count of Schwyz and try to form the Swiss Confederation while fending off Germans, Franks and Lombards.

Im only hoping PDS will still convince me that theres more than 1 game to be had with the Republic, but so far... Meh.

I would be more excited about Pagan DLC instead of Republic DLC to be honest... I'm also disappointed that feudal lords can't become republicans and republicans can't become feudal lords

I agree it's a pretty minor DLC and i'd rather have something else. For example i wish there would be some kind of "highscores" or "hall of fame" in the game where you see the results of your previous dynasties... because at the moment once the game ends you'll just see the game over screen with barely any information, nothing gets saved and you just start again... it would be nice to get some more statistics and have the ability to save that information. I know i'm a statistic freak i guess but would be nice to have a screen where you see you have accomplished something in the game.
