Who's interested in a mapmaking tutorial?

Hello folks,

As I recently learnt to make (imho decent) maps using Photoshop I was playing with the idea to make a mapmaking tutorial. Now I wonder if a group of interested people could be gathered to make the effort pay of, especially as I want to do it in 'class style'. That means I will post every week one "lesson"* and everyone who participates posts his progress. Thus I hope to create a place were AAR-Cartographers (aka mapmakers) can discuss their maps and help each other to improve.

For this task I need three things:

• A moderator to tell me where to put it, and probably some help.

• Help and/or Advice from some of the veteran cartographer of AARland

• All YOU interested and ambitious AAR authors to participate

So what do you think?


*lesson might be a strong word as I only recently became used to Photoshop myself but nonetheless you will see some improvements in your maps.

Mapmaking tutorials are always useful, even for those of us who have made maps before, it's always incredibly useful to look at new methods and ideas

You can place it in this GD forum (in fact, in this thread which we can rename.) I'd love to see one thread where all the tutorials go so someone looking for advice has it all in one place (outside of the fAARq that is.) Sounds like a good idea. Plenty of folks are always interested in map making ideas so I'd imagine you should have some takers.

I'd be greateful for all tutorials regarding mapmaking. I'm not too bad as it is, but I like to improve my work.

Besides, looking at the popularity gained by tuore's mapmaking tutorial I'd say there's definitely demand for such.

A mapmaking consortium gets my interest, definitely. No way I could compete with your maps, Treppe, but I might have ideas here and there to input - and more importantly, plenty of learning to do.

At them moment I have very little time on my fingertips but as soon as I got my university stuff sorted out I will begin.

Vishaing may also be a good person to do this with, he does some amazing maps for his AAR (A Tale of Two Germanies - EU3). He's been helping me out detailing how he's done his maps so he might be willing to help out if you contact him.
