I came on the forums just to look for a thread like this. The AI who I had a defensive pact with just declared an offensive war and somehow I got dragged into it. Are you guys using the 2.7.2 beta or 2.7.1?

Can confirm observation of getting dragged into an offensive war due to a defensive pact.
Had the same popup earlier today with a faction, that my only interaction with was making a commercial, non-aggression and defensive pact.

It's not necessary to have any pacts or be part of a federation to get into wars this way. I have no diplomacy outside of a vassal, the vassal has no connection with the war we've been dragged into, and neither do I. Seems to me that it's a case of automatically (and instantly) accepting offensive war invitations.

I saw it personally on the 2.7.2 beta but threads about it started up last week for 2.7.1, so I think it's a 2.7 regression.

I ran into a potentially related bug today:

When inviting AI empires to join my war, and they display as willing to join (green checkmark), they ALWAYS refuse anyway. Not just that, I also get a war vote prompt from myself that I can vote on, with a glitchy interface. I think the war invite system has somehow gotten mixed up with the federation war vote system.

in my experience, you've always had to vote on your own war proposal. in a federation, anyway.

Yeah. It's the war vote that's causing this, because the devs thought it was an amazing idea to hide these popups... I managed to catch one before it went through. If you miss it and abstain, it assumes you voted yes and you're pulled into a war. Hydari Star Union is friendly with me and tried to invite me into this war.

This will happen with Federation war votes as well. Just keep an eye on your notifications in the top left for crossed swords until the devs fix this mess.

Honestly, these windows should be as in-your-face as possible if they're gonna treat an abstain as a "yes" vote.

Actually, they should probably be in-your-face anyway. Pre 2.6, when playing with a couple of friends, I've had war declaration votes fail because one friend failed to notice the notification.

Interesting how I've gone away for a few days and fellow players are finding the issue out and have updated the thread.

I think the corpus of examples is beginning to take shape. I guess a prompt message to at least a dev person would be ideal instead of firing countless incidents in the Bug Report Forum?

I don't know. Which method would be quicker, since Stellaris is infamous for... you know... not fixing bugs.

I've still not actually played Stellaris since 2.7 launched due to technical issues with my computer, so I've not personally experienced this yet... But how the hell did the devs manage to introduce this bug?

I'm so glad you guys posted this. I spent the entirety of a game thinking I was an idiot.

I kept getting dragged into offensive wars by my not-really-good-friends to enforce their claims on empire X, even though I had no claims. I would never have accepted without at least burning some influence to generate my own claims.

Why would abstain even result in acceptance of the offer? That doesn't make sense, given how important wars are.

The war vote may be one cause for this, but it can definitely also happen without any vote, as my example above shows. No federation, no alliances, no diplomacy of any kind --- you've agreed to support an offensive war, good luck.

Thank you everyone for solving a mystery I had in some of my games. I thought I was a bloody moron., but what has happened was:

Clerk:
Supreme leader, before you go, could you please sign the diplomas for the Cadet's squadrons? They are on your desk, also there are several birthday wishes cards for some nobles and their children, 4 decrees on technical specifications introducing new safety standards and some other usual stuff.
Supreme leader:
Lovely, thank you, where are my glasses?
Clerk:
Supreme leader, you are running late, please just sign them.
SL:
Oh sure, I trust you, let me just sign this.
Clerk next day:
Supreme leader, following your declaration of war on the Hiroshi Confederacy, what are your orders?
SL:
MY WHAT????!!!
Clerk:
You signed the declaration yesterday, Sir. Here is the document.
CL:
Damn....hmmm....well bring in the fleet, construct ground troops and I guess we kill them.
Clerk:
Right away Supreme Leader.
