While Bill Gates is truly beyond well-fortunate, that's still a massive oversimplification and serious misunderstanding of what Bill Gates did. Good luck.

It was intended to be a massive oversimplification. I don’t consider exactly how which brand of software has the dominant position as an OS to be such an almighty thing. Apple, Xerox-Parc, DEC, Linux and many others would be there to pick up the slack if Microsoft never existed or had failed to establish itself early on in the PC OS game. Indeed we might have been better off if Gates had failed to consolidate his early lead. It’s like fighting about which is a better pickup truck; Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Nissan or Toyota. They all make fine products and it’s an incident of fate that Ford is the leading seller. If Ford didn’t exist we would all still have plenty of excellent options.

"Someone or something that is interesting keeps your attention because he, she, or it is unusual, exciting, or has a lot of ideas" -- https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/interesting

Bill Gates' amount of wealth is unusual. That's not taking into account the other accomplishments Bill Gates has done.

Try to... think what you say through more.
Amount of money is a number. It keeps me interested for about one second.

So far that's the only point of interest you have mentioned. And you still haven't explained why Bill Gates when Rockefeller was (inflation adjusted) several times wealthier than Bill Gates has ever been.

Carniege held more liquid wealth than Rockfeller.

I've heard claims that Bill Gates has more purchasing power parity than Rockfeller.

The richest man in the world is a very complicated question. It depends whether you can use economics to estimate someone's wealth to begin with, then you have to establish whether that estimate can be extrapolated to modern 2018.

Rockfeller was also noted for being secretive...

It depends on how far back you go, and whether absolute rulers are included.

I don't see any rational connection between wealth and what would commonly be understood as interesting. It isn't sufficient to merely repeat that he is rich as an explanation of why we should find him interesting.

The wealth of people like Gates, Carlos Slim, or Warren Buffet is in constant flux. These fluctuations in their wealth from year to year don't make them more or less interesting to me any more than their wealth attracts my interest in the first place.

Does Gates become more interesting as a person when the markets go up?

Wealth is utility, plain and simple.

I agree but utility has no bearing on how interesting something is. A pallet full of gold sitting in Fort Knox has tremendous utility but about zero interest. I can’t imagine having a pleasant evening sipping beer and discussing the world with a pile of gold.

Wealth is utility, plain and simple.
Utility is usually used in an oppositional way to interesting. Utilitarian has strong connotations with boring.

Since we're just putting definitions out there and the like:

The moost interesting man in the world needs to have achievement in totally different fields (and not all military - I know you guys & gals), be well travelled, and obviously having an high ratio of success.

Narwhal started this thread with a particular definition of "interesting" in mind. Having lots of money and being very important do not make you interesting, they make you notable. People are often fascinated by notable people -- which is why biographies are a thing -- but notability alone doesn't make you interesting per the definition provided by Narwhal in the OP.

Does Gates become more interesting as a person when the markets go up?

Depends. How big are his hands? Do they fluctuate in line with the market?

Fields: Author, philanthropist, programmer, educater, entrepreneur, public speaker.

His philanthropy can be broken up into various sub-fields but the OP said they had to be separate.

This is lesser known, but Bill Gates has investments in many fields of investments such as real estate:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascade_Investment
https://www.azcentral.com/story/mon...al-estate-development-near-phoenix/842280001/

obviously having an high ratio of success.

Money is a major variable in the ratio of success.

Edit: Added public speaker to the list.

Fields: Author

He wrote two books, both within his principal field, neither of which were particularly influential. How does that make him more interesting than say, Orwell, who wrote some of the most influential works of fiction and non-fiction ever, while also serving as a front-line soldier in the Spanish Civil War?

philanthropist

Philanthropy is not a field. Philanthropy is a hobby for rich people. Having and donating money do not make you an interesting person.

Even if it did, what makes Gates more interesting than say, Crassus? I don't ever recall Gates bankrolling one of the most interesting men in history then invading Parthia.

programmer

Clearly the most interesting of the world's many professions.

Gates was hardly influential even in programming terms. His principal role at Microsoft was always that of a business executive rather than that of an inventor: even back when he still contributed to coding, (something he hasn't done for 30+ years, mind) his main job was to oversee code written by his subordinates. As gagenater pointed out, the software which made his name -- DOS -- was licensed by him; his one big idea was really someone else' s. How does that make him more interesting that say, Edison, who came up with a variety equally important big ideas on his own in addition to engaging in a series of dodgy business practices which would make even Gates blush?

Please tell us how many formal teaching positions have been held by Bill Gates. Please tell us about the many initiatives Gates has launched to innovate and improve the art of teaching. And no, for the love of God, the infernal PowerPoint doesn't count!

Feynman was a bona fide educator, who not only taught actual students at actual universities but engaged in pedagogical studies. Feynman was also a Nobel prize winner who wrote (sort of) two books people actually read, worked on the Manhattan Project and cracked safes for fun. What makes Gates more interesting than him?

entrepreneur

At least this is something Gates can fairly lay claim to being. That being said, what sets him apart from other science-based entrepreneurs like Edison, Dyson or Musk? What makes him more interesting than entrepreneur-turned-politicians like Chamberlain or Trump? What notable things has Gates achieved outside the business realm?

public speaker.

Again, this is not a field. This is something notable people do to supplement their income. If you want to get pedantic you don't even need to be notable; it's something any nut with a rostrum can do at any old Speaker's Corner.

Gates is not known for his oratory (and for very good reason.) Plenty of notable people, even in the same or similar fields (Branson, for instance) are better communicators than him. His words will not echo through history as say, MLK or Cicero's do. What makes him more interesting than either?

Money is a major variable in the ratio of success.

We've covered this.

And Bill Gates has a jet.
http://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-enjoying-his-guilty-pleasure-2015-4

If you could get a jet or a dinosaur for free, which would you choose?

Tons of rich people have jets. How many have dinosaurs? :p

Philanthropic Studies is a degree you can actually get.

At one obscure American university, as an extension of a BA.

I can't believe I have to say this, but the fact that some people engage in academic studies of charity does not make the people who give to charity interesting to people who don't engage in academic studies of charity!

The premise was that philanthropy was not an academic field of study.

The university is not obscure.
