I have been doing some testing to see why it is so hard to run down, or sink Carrier's with surface ships.
The results have been very revealing.
I loaded up one of my saved games where, Germany is in a very strong position having Annexed the UK, Russia and all of Europe including Italy.
USA is still strong but so far has been very passive, and is not at war.
I first loaded Japan and deleted ALL of its aircraft.
I then Loaded as Germany, and rebased all the CAG's to far away air bases.
The plan was to simulate Carriers with no or destroyed CAG's, and without interference from other aircraft to see how they fair against SAG's
I started by sending out several fleets of CV and CVL with just an even number of CL escorts each.
I played around with it for most of the day today, taking a lot of screen shots, and not one of the Japanese SAG's managed to win a battle, and not one of the ships in them managed to fire a single round at the CV or CVL fleets.
Some of the engagements lasted for days, but Germany with the CV without CAG's would always win the battle and maintain command of the zone.
In fact no salvoes at all were fired at an enemy fleet in dozens of engagements but I did get excited a few times when I saw firing from the Japanese, but it was just friendly fire!
Germany has a very strong navy with up to date techs, and a lot more in production.
I was actually beginning to wonder if this is partly why the SAG's never fire at the CV's. Maybe the high level radar tech allowed the German CV's to always know where the Japanese fleets are, and thus stay away, so I decided to do a test to dispel this theory.
I attached a transport to the least advanced CV group I had, and decided to invade Tokyo with it directly.
This scenario starts just after a DOW on Japan, with a completely un molested army and Navy, but with NO aircraft of any kind.
Playing as Germany on Normal, I will sail my 2xCV with NO CAG's, 2xCL + 1TR and take Tokyo with 2x Marine divisions.
I will be telling it with the aid of Screen shots.
