Hey everyone. Been a while since I logged into these forums. I first discovered the EU series with EU3 and often came here to get help figuring out some of the game mechanics. While I saw how much depth the game had I really am just not interested in that period of history. I tried to overlook the setting and just enjoy the game but alas, it never happened and so it was abandoned.
When I heard about EU: Rome (yesterday) I thought my dreams had come true and immediately ordered it and even payed for next day delivery. However despite receiving positive reviews from the major internet sites I come here to find quite a negative reaction to it which is pretty disheartening. My order has been dispatched so I can't cancel it so does anyone here actually love this game and have good things to say about it?

does anyone here actually love this game and have good things to say about it?

I do.
1)
I really did not want to be locked into a historical replay EU2 style, so that lack of historical direction once you've started the game is more of a pro than a con to me.

2)
There are bugs, of course, but this is par for the course with strategy games. Even such giants as CIV4 were crash-happy for the first few months of their existence, and EUR is, at this point, extremely stable by comparison.

3) The new character system, while quite under-developed at this point, provides an entirely new layer to the experience, and I don't think anyone has (or possibly can, fully) grasped the sheer magnitude of what can be done with such a layer. Participating in hundreds of character-driven stories, with consequences that will shape an empire, over a span of hundreds of years sound interesting to you? It sure as hell does to me, and this is what we are moving towards as we speak.

4)
EUR provides an excellent slate on which to build mods of all shapes and descriptions. We can build from scratch in a way that was harder to do with EU3. My own personal experience with EU3 has given me a bias here, as I probably would have been fed up with vanilla after a few months, had I not discovered Magna Mundi. I'm not saying it will be mine, but I believe a grand mod will become the heart and soul of this game for myself and countless others, I can only hope my own contributions at this early stage will help move others in some small way towards achieving that goal.

So yeah, you could say I have "some good things to say about it".

Yeah this is something that really appeals to me but Ive seen a lot of people on this forum saying that characters die too often. Thanks for your response!

So far it is my favourite Paradox Interactve game together but slightly higher than EU3 and one of my favourite strategy games ever.

It doesn't make me feel bored to tears with countless adjustments of every single thing that an emperor shouldn't have to deal with.

The graphics and style are the best in the series.
I could go on, but the basic reason I enjoy and love this game (even with the remaining bugs), is that the game is FUN and it doesn't feel like a job or like an interactive book.

I recently finished my first full game as Macedonia and had LOTS of provinces, but even then I didn't find the deaths of characters the problem that many others claim to be for them. A couple of characters per year is quite normal IMO and all the 4 clicks or so to change one character not a huge mental problem for me.

I love it. I'm fascinated by all the little family dramas and strange quirks the characters have. But they made it too hard to track down all your characters and dynasties, which I think is the source of a lot of the frustration.

I'm pretty new to Paradox games, so maybe others have seen this work well in games I haven't played.

Me too. All the negativity on this board did put me off for a while but when I finally played it I had a great time. Unfortunately I did fall foul to the loyal donation bug during a civil war. I did not really liking the gamey solutions of sending them all off to a war to be slaughtered or just sending them to sea to drown so I stopped the game. I have been trying the Rome Enhanced mod but each new version of that isn't save game compatible so I am now just playing the first few years over and over again (thanks Battlecry). But I do keep coming back to the forum everyday checking for updates and I would have to say that, for me at least, it is drawing me in and calling me back for more as much as In Nomine at the moment. Nuff said.

so far I am loving the game I use the rome enhanced mod because its awesome lol but even without it I enjoyed the game. it has a lot of depth and router d besides some annoying little things like movement restarting when u click out two orders but its a great game. I never played eu3 but I like it more than hoi2 which is the only other paradox game I've played. get it and try it out look for some mods to fix the ping pong battles

It is very good, theres a few issues, but hopefully these should be sorted out.

Its much like EUIII in the sense of history, so if your looking for a historical game where you'll be contesting with Rome. Mistake, Seleucids and Carthage are the only superpowers (In AI controll) Rome and Egypt are very poor under AI guidence, and usually get ripped apart byt one of the two megapowers.

I also suggest getting a MOD. (Rome enhanced is good ;))

It needs something, anything, to make it fun to play during peacetime. If you like creating your own constant war, its fun. Beware of peace, it's a snoozer.
