I would have swapped Montgomery with Yamamoto, for several reasons. First of all, there are 3 Allied leaders compared to 1 Axis. Second of all, they don't have any naval leaders. Thirdly, I feel like the Pacific theater is not well represented enough (meanwhile 2 of the 4 guys depicted fought primarily on the African theater, whose impact was negligible). Also, with all due respect I do not think he is as well known as the other guys, and obviously I did not recognize him.

Neither Montgomery nor Rommel primarily fought in the African theater. Rommel was a division commander throughout the French campaign and commanded the Germans during the Normandy invasion (though he was so far bogged down by red tape it's hard to say how much he could actually do). Montgomery led British forces through the rest of the war, and was also responsible for the debacle of Market Garden.

That said, the cover would be just as symmetrical if they had 5 people, since Japan had a huge impact on the war and should be represented IMHO.

While I agree on the 3 to 1 front, the low representation of the Pacific theater and only the Army being representative, Eisenhower and Montgomery are responsible for the Normandy landings as you know them; both immediately wanted to expand the initial plan they were presented with and were heavily involved with the new plans with the greater scope. Montgomery took commander of all ground forces for the entirety of Operation Overlord, and continued commanding all of the British forces (as well as ordering other Allied forces, including American) after Eisenhower took command of all Allied forces post-Overlord. He was also a key player in the planning and commanded the invasion of Sicily and Italy, as well as leading the African theater from the back and forth fight to a complete victory. You might not have known about him, but he was certainly important to the war and his impact was far from negligible. I don't think his removal would be warranted, an additional inclusion like hkrommel mentioned would be much more appropriate.

I've heard that Montgomery saw the impact of Rommel's celebrity status on the British troops, and decided to adopt a similar persona. For example, he only began wearing his famous beret after he arrived in North Africa, to mimic Rommel's famous hat with his British gas goggles and his scarf.

I would say- Guderian, Manstein or even Rundstedt would be apt to represent the Germans,
Montgomery is appropriate for the British and Zhukov for the Russians.
Patton would be apt for the USA or Nimitz would be equally good.
Yamamoto or Tomoyoki Yamashita for the Japanese will make the 5th person.

Three of them are widely regarded as the most capable of their nation, and the fourth and his acolytes held that opinion of himself.

But you know none of the people above operated alone, they all had talented people helping them. Perhaps the difference is three of these people listened to their staff, one didn't.

If I take iconic out of the equation I would take G.C. Marshall, would be interesting if they replaced them with Naval leaders. Personally I would put Cunningham, Raeder, Nimitz, and replace USSR with Yamamoto of course . How about everyone else? I picked Raeder over Doenitz because after reading into his Strategic mindset I believe him to be a much more capable war leader at that level then Doenitz.

Agree with your choices. How about this one...

"Bomber" Harris, Adolf Gallan, Le May/Chennault and ??? Anyone got a fourth for Air Leaders?

Alexander Novikov will do, the Chief Marshal of the RED Air Force for most of the GPW (as it is called in Russia).

also it is -Adolf Galland not Gallan.

Before this thread turns into a "My Favourite Commander Not on the Box", it's clear they wanted one military leader from each major nation (obvious omissions from Japan) and Monty is probably the most recognizable British commander of the war.

Milch was a bureaucrat not a "leader" on the ground, the most famous Luftwaffe leaders are - Wolfram von Richthofen (a WW1 ace and cousin to the famous Richtofen family) who was an exceptionally well qualified leader with a doctorate in Aeronautics engineering but was due to the above mentioned "Milch" sidelined from aircraft procurement. He later was commander of a "Fleigerkorps", something like an Air Army. Also Werner Molders (died too early) and Adolf Galland are very famous as leaders of the Jagdwaffe (fighter aircraft).

Pity Montgomery was a homophobic supporter of Apartheid who tore into the war record and legacy of nearly all his wartime colleagues and contemporaries.

Pity Montgomery was a homophobic supporter of Apartheid who tore into the war record and legacy of nearly all his wartime colleagues and contemporaries.

Contemptible man.
While I think that Monty's generalship was good, I completely agree with your assessment of his character. He was an arrogant, narcissistic, socially inept jerk.

Eh, Churchill also wasn't a very nice man, it wasn't too uncommon at the time for people to have views that nowadays we consider horrendous. We don't admire them for their not so nice political views or personalities, we admire them for their leadership and action.

Good reasoning, but since this game is mostly targeted to western audience, those 4 chaps are more regornisable ones. Not everybody reads history, but everybody has heard about Rommel and many have heard about Montgomery, Patton (wait... that guy is McArthur...) and Chukov.

Agreed, during WW2, it very uncommon NOT to be racist. So it is just stupid to think badly of someone at the time becouse he was racist, they all were. USA even had legal racism until 1960s.

I think the cover art is mostly fine in terms of representation. Germany, the US, the UK, and the USSR were the main powers in the war, and each is represented by their most famous military leader during the war, with the exception of MacArthur. I think they put him in there just because he looks pretty cool with his sun glasses and pipe :D
