In my current (1.33) game, the only two long-term colonies in North America have been Spanish Canada and Florida. Spanish Canada remains a successful - if now rebellious - colony. Florida at once stretched from Florida to Connecticut, and at one point as far inland as Tennessee, but has seen much volatility, according to the Timeline. It was recently (1650s) entirely conquered by several federations, with the Kasihta Federation being the most powerful.
English Mexico has been the poster child for a not-worthwhile colony; they've been going bankrupt every five years and are seemingly always at war; they aren't now but have six separate truces in effect. If I were England, I'd just give up on them, but the English AI has instead spent all its spare manpower keeping English Mexico alive. Now they've founded English Columbia (in Baja California), which I don't have much hope for either.
At one point the Kasihta Federation was a Great Power (6th rank, IIRC), but they haven't embraced Manufactories yet and thus fell off the rankings in favor of Scandinavia and Naples.
I haven't been colonizing this game, so it's been interesting to watch; I'd never seen the AI get pushed back like this while colonizing before.
Although it has been annoying that occasionally one of the migratory North American tribes decided to move their capital every month, spamming me with notifications (I like to know when nations move capitals, but not if it's that often). I've also noticed that some colonial provinces are recording the "Adopted [home country] Culture" event about 7 times a year, which makes it hard to figure out the history of a province outside of the Timeline.
Also of note is that Abenaki formed the United States (confirmed via Timeline). According to the wiki, this isn't supposed to happen if they have an American technology group, but somehow they joined the Nomadic tech group. Mikmaq has done the same, and while the USA is a Tribal Monarchy, Mikmaq decided to become Steppe Nomads in the woods of Nova Scotia. My best guess is this happened via government reforms.
Conversely, in my 1.32 game (also one where I didn't colonize), the European powers colonized North America about as they typically do, until I abandoned the game in 1652.
