Name says it all! What countries do you play, and how do you play them? (Politics, research, wars, etc)

Before my current game, I played European powers(or the USA) and tried to conquer as much as possible without going over the infamy limit.

Now, I'm trying to conquer as much as possible without regard to infamy(once I'm strong enough). My immediate plans for ext games in AHD are Austria(to form Greater Germany and conquer Europe) and China(after civilising, I'll have the largest army and conquer all of Asia).

My general rule - don't play big countries.
Only starting GP I like to play as is Prussia, because you actually need some struggle to be number 1. UK/France/Austria/USA/Russia are already powerful. Russia can be tricky, but others are just too easy.
So, as Prussia - obviously, forming Germany, taking French regions and Dutch East-Indian colonies, building both canals, destroy Austria, free Balkans, especially Greece (of course, if Greater Germany, only Greece and Bosnia). Help CSA, take Texas, later destroy both USA and CSA. Colonizing Africa (I hate doing it, but if I won't, other countries will), colonizing Pacific, destroy UK, free Ireland and Scotland, sphere most of Asia and America...
But behind expansionism, actually my real goal is industrial domination. Expansionism is only for defense from some naive frenchies.

On the second place - Japan. Though, in AHD it's much more harder to compete with european GPs since you're unciv and will lag behind in many techs until 1900 I guess. New unciv mechanics is great for AI, so it actually can civilize, but pain for human Japan. It's possible to have decent industrial techs in 1880 but only at cost of almost not having army and naval techs. Goals are similar, though, expansionism is mostly in Asia, not overseas.

Small countries fun to play - Ireland, Belgium (until the first continental war), Sweden's fun, but tricky, since Germany and Russia don't like you forming Scandinavia and it's hard to defend since you have low population.
I absolutely love Greece and Serbia, but playing them in Victoria just frustrates me.
Also, I don't play democracies - it's constant anger. When you need some party in charge, you can spend decades trying to get them in power but never succeed.

I like to play as Austria-Hungary. I like trying to keep Prussia weak and Germany divided if I can. I also like trying to maintain my grip on the Northern Italian states. My goals for territorial gain is taking Bosnia and the republic of Krakow. I also try to take the Sanjak of Novi Pazar in my multiple wars with the Ottomans. I gradually enact new election laws giving the upper classes more say in the elections and stripping the Emperor of his Absolute authority. I usually promote Industry in Bohemia. I don't bother with overseas conquests my colonies are in Europe.

Ireland is REALLY fun, just remember the good 'ol dreadnought spam and you can finish #1 easy. Basically get madagascar and sokoto if you can, then colonize africa and snag as much high population east asian territory as possible.

I enjoy playing as obscure, historically weak and small, poor, technologically behind countries. My favorites are Ethiopia, Mexico, Dai Nam, Korea, Russia, the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, Najd, and Persia. I don't really have a set strategy, I mostly just try to keep a decent balance every day and keep the population swayed towards a conservative/reactionary party (in spite of me being very liberal IRL), while building a decent-sized army. Never too strong, because that would be boring - and never too weak, because then its less awesome when I die.

I don't play to conquer massive amounts of land, I play mostly for the economic/political bits (especially as an unciv) but I do go on a lot of colonizing and annexing Asian countries (Mexican Vietnam, anyone?) I enjoy putting myself through wars I know I can't win, the feeling is simply awesome when you face a war that you know you can't win. Your armies are losing on every front or at the very least taking massive casualties, war exhaustion is insanely high and all your ports are blockaded, but you fight on anyway. So I often don't take advantage of my biggest rival's weakness (or even do things to help them a bit) simply because my favorite part of any Paradox game is simply being overwhelmed. If someone was to take a look at an endgame save of mine and load up the country I played they would find themselves at war with the USA, UK, France, and China all at once, and you're holding firm. Somehow.

I like large challenging wars as well, but I hate losing them, so i usually only start ones I think I have at least a decent chance of winning. I have had to WP our of huge wars I started in the past simply because I got too overwhelmed, too many enemies eventually gets rough.
Prussia is a great fave of mine, LOVE forming Germany, and I never form it with or even including Austria. I like to beat on them for some reason. When I get AHD I'll be forming a Greater Germany however, with Austrian lands incorporated. Freeing Greece, Ottoman Montenegro, Albania, and Southern Serbia are usualy priorities, as well as the Suez Canal which I use a launch point to colonize Africa from both sides. Also a good way to make war on the Ottomans from two sides and free up any Egyptian lands they have stolen.
Never play GB, France, Russia (well had one very successful game as them), or USA. I find them all too large and powerful at such an early stage that its not enough of a challenge. Russia is the only possible exception, it can take hard work to turn them into the powerhouse they can be.

I like to play countries that have many options...I still stay away from top dogs.
I dislike countries that require to wait 50 years to do something or that depend on this or that alliance to do anything.
I play a modded mixed setting of normal, hard and very hard, no matter the country i play.
My 3 prefered are Austria, Russia and Ottomans.

Im some sort of imperialist as i expand mostly from uncivs and colonization, but i like to take 1 state here and there from my biggest neighbour.
I try to stay under 15, possibly 10 infamy as i like the diplomatic game too, using the top dogs to fight one against the other in alliance is fun to me.
Later in the game, i go for the highest ranked countries...

Well thats it mostly.

I really hate the France's general population decline of -0.1% at the beginning, it should just apply to France proper, but not oversea colonies.

I like Afghanistan. There is no real shot of doing much but trying to maintain a large army and fight off the British Empire as long as you can. One game I actually managed two or three war with the United Kingdom until they finally decided to take all of Panjab and open up the front.

Easy strategy really though. Go right for military techs (V2, no AHD) and build up Infantry, Cavalry and Forts. Getting supplies to build them right away is a nightmare but eventually the market cools down enough to allow youtoget them, and them stockpile like crazy. Then keep them at near zero maintenance to maintain a balanced budget, then when the UK comes knocking around 1850 or 60, let them crash into your fortified mountains, drain themselves, attack, win, retreat. Rinse and repeat for about 5 years for a WP. Never, ever, ever, ever go on the offensive. The UK has far far to many reserves they keep for enemy counter-offenses.

Still I hate seeing them take the Gobi Dessert or invade through Himalayas into China. Makes no sense.

I have played a lot of different nations, ranging from USA to Hyderabad. In general I enjoy smaller ones because they are a bit more challenging.

My usual strategy:
(1) Get 2% bureaucrats in my largest provinces. Boost national clergymen to 4% to boost literacy. Once literacy is up to 85-90% reduce clergymen numbers to 2%.
(2) Research ideological though. Research philosphy techs. Get social thought techs. Start a research pattern that improves RGOs. Start a research pattern that improves factories.
(3) Aquire any cores that are under enemy control and do not require a world war. Sphere South America and S Asia.
(4) Pass as many reforms as fast as possible, esp. trade unions.
(5) Grab as many colonies as possible. Aquire tropical wood/rubber provinces.
(6) Start industrializing around 1860. Get Management Strategy around 1870.
(7) Roflstomp the AI and take interesting regions from 1900 onwards.

Hi GAGA,
Interesting.
Can I ask, does boosting cleargy to 4% help increase literary more quickly, in your experience?

I am now starting another AHD game as Mexico. July 1852 now.
Had grabbed Texas, colonized and stated Oklahoma and Colorado, the usual.
Had also grabbed Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Tunis, Zulu, Transvaal, in the process of grabbing Oranje.
Was lucky 'cause USA allied me on Day 1.

Any pointers for me?

I usually play as releasable nations. My favorites are Hungary and South Africa since they have the potential to be GP's. As Hungary I just help free people against the Ottomans and try to take some land from Austrians when they are weak, as SA I unite SA in a few years then go conquer some land from North Africa before I start colonizing.

Oh shit, just when I was getting cocky, out of no way the idiot Portugal declared war on me. Guess what's the war goal? Freeing Colorado to the American. What kind of stupid war goal is that? The UK joined in, they are Portugal's sphere master. My ally USA, naturally deserted me, thus breaking the alliance.

Seeing that I had no chance at all (I was still Oranje), I agreed to the peace deal immediately. The next second, USA declared war on me for New Mexico.

I had stationed a 11 brigades army at the fort city of Houston, with a defence +4 general, waiting for the American. They eventually came at me with 15 brigades. I was thinking,

Guess what, I lost! Tagging to US to check, they have 7 army techs, compares to my 4.

What should I do?

My favourite countryi s Prussia and I usually try to form Greater Germany as fast as possible (takes me about 8 years now), then my aim for the rest of the game is to conquer central europe (conquer Belgium and the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, Switzerland, Northern Italy, Eastern Half of France).

Then its all about getting the UK, Russia, France, Italy, Spain, Ottomans, Scandinavia/Sweden and the USA and releasing as many countries as possible and then puppeting & sphereing them and the former GPs.

Hi GAGA,
Interesting.
Can I ask, does boosting cleargy to 4% help increase literary more quickly, in your experience?
Yes. You will receive roughly twice as much literacy compared to having 2% clergymen. With biologism, it should increase around 0.13 per month.

See lines 424-426 in defines.txt:
Code:
	BASE_CLERGY_FOR_LITERACY = 0.005,
	MAX_CLERGY_FOR_LITERACY = 0.04,
	LITERACY_CHANGE_SPEED = 0.1,
