So I am getting a good chunk of gold, way more than I need. I can't use it to purchase mercenaries of units, so aside from building upkeep what good is gold?

It becomes quite useless if youre not taking any losses and thus not building any new units and spending money to upgrade them.
Its critical if you base your tactics on buying perks for units, that are only available through certain buildings.
Especially so if you have a large amount of units when you decide to build these or units are built in cities other than where those buildings exist.
eg. Foundry building, cheese cave, minotaur labyrinth etc...
I find that excess gold only occurs in late game and even then it comes in handy for buying and upgrading high tier units like dragons and temple units. If I still have excess gold, I buy lots of booze, have a party and get laid.
okay I figured it out. I was on a small island so I got lots of gold without utilizing many resources. Now that I discovered continental power and began losing and buying in mass I am out of gold. Besides this fluke I have learned that I should start on a large land mass.
