I was worried there for a while too.:D

The reason for the dash is that she simply forgot to renew her domain-name license. There are sharks out there monitoring big sites. Just minutes after the license for a domain name expires, they register it themselves to redirect traffic to their puny crappy sites. The idiots who snatched UD's domain got a really lame search engine running.

Of course, if something like this happens, there is no problem to simply slightly rename one's domain. But think of all the links from other sites to yours! E.g. I recently found links from Norm Koger's site to Home of the Underdogs (Norm indeed encourages people to download his old classics there) - now the links are pointing to that crap search engine (I already informed UD about this, though).

Defender of the Crown was great. It was amazing what they got out of the lowly C64. Castles II was another classic.

Ah... now only the prospect of CK excites me as most strategy games seem stuck in the same old derivative rut.

And that rut usually does not include medieval games. Although Medieval: Total War is on its way. :) I hope it is more of a strategy game than Shogun - the strategy layer there was poor.:(

Norm Koger's site? Could you post the url please?

One of MY favourite games covering this peiod was, and still is, Medieval Lords. I believe that is available from The Underdogs, if not email me privately - the Author sent me an opened-up copy, so that the protection is disabled. (Really nice guy!)

Sadly, abandonwares by bigger companies are under the IDSA protection. Even if they are sold in stores no more, you may not download them either. You'll have to find them somewhere else (Ebay for example).

I played it on the C64 alot. Never really liked the Amiga version because it missed alot of things from the C64 version. Never really got hang of the swordfighting using the mouse, it was so different from using the joystick.

HOTU is not meant as an abandonware site, but rather as a museum. The goal is that old (and underrated) classics are not forgotten.

That's why there are many pages dedicated to games which underdogs can not or does not want to offer for download because they either are still available in decent quantities (if you really care to look for them), or, while not available anymore, are protected by the IDSA (as Drakken pointed out).

All that said, the site nevertheless offers the largest amount of abandoned games for download on the net - bar none. :)
