I have also seen other posts mentioning this so I assumed no-one was using shadows or bloom! Do you mind saying what gfx hardware you are running, maybe it is a driver issue?

Sorry, forgot to tell you: The performance gain that I got was really through NVIDEA panel, not through the settings file.

There is nothing wrong with your computer, the file settings reverts to "no" because the game does not support it at this time.

So if you want your game to look better, you have to go outside the game and use settings for Anti-aliasing and Anisotropic like I do.

1920 x 1080, but Paradox needs to either up their basis for resolution immensely, (feels like they're designing it for 1024x768 still) make scalable UI (best solution) or add reconfigurable keybinds (needed together with any other case in fact) for everything. I literally was struggling to embark ships from every little island Byzantines have for every battle and I had to do that many times over till I get my lands backs so I wouldn't have to deal with Crete, Cyprus, Malta and Crimea every single war. The buttons are TINY (no pun intended) and I have to press a lot of them. I'm going crazy really, I'd trade two island provinces for one land province.

Because the UI/Fonts are so tiny I run 1680x1050 on a 27" 16:9 monitor just so it's borderline functional.
