The Hanseatic League will be in the game, probably with a bookmark and certainly formable via events.

I'll do Venice, most likely, though I'm really looking forward to a game as the Republic of Tripoli, Samos, or some other Eastern Empire province that I'll set up as a republic for funsies.

Besides Florence through most of the game was the Capital of Tuscany....you know Matilda's playground But late game it could possibly be a Republic...

Yeah, those fancy-pantsy Dogebags can go get a hairdo or something. I'mma play as Lord Novgorod the Great, which will not be possible, so I'll opt for the Hansa instead. Or Gotland (lol Gotland)

Thanks. To answer the OP. I think ill play as Venice (Don't know any of the families) and try and carve a powerhouse out of the chaos in the eastern Mediterranean.

I will play as one of the Genoan families who doesn't have a Doge in 1066. For some reason I have really started to like Genoa.
