Which Purge type to use as a fanatic purifier?

So we know that fanatic purifiers will automatically purge all xenos within their borders, but what purge type should be chosen. For reference (I've removed displacement since it isn't allowed by the civic)

  • Extermination: The species is systemically killed off by any means available. This is the fastest form of purging, but pops subject to it are unable to produce any resources while they are busy dying off.
  • Forced Labor: The species is placed in camps and forced to do hard labor under brutal conditions with inadequate food and shelter, effectively working them to death. Pops doing Forced Labor will be killed off more slowly than through extermination, but will continue to produce minerals, food and (at a significant penalty) energy.
  • Processing: The species is processed into food for the consumption of other Pops. Pops being Processed generate a fixed amount of food and die off at a fairly fast pace, but cannot be put to use producing any other resources.
  • Neutering: The species is prevented from reproducing through chemical castration or biological modification, eventually dying off naturally. Neutered Pops continue to function normally and may even be given a high standard of life, but have a large penalty to their happiness. The speed at which they die off varies based on the species' natural lifespan, but is typically very slow.
I would think processing would help grow your pops to fill the places left the fastest, but forced labor also has it's appeal in letting you make the most minerals possible out of them.

Honestly any of them except neutering, I can't imagine Fanatical Purifiers being patient enough to wait for a pop to die of old age.

The only problem with 'processing' I could see is 'Do you really want that xeno to be a part of you?'
Who knows what kind of parasites, diseases, microbes etc you could be ingesting by consuming the xeno.

But in all seriousness, yeah my guess is they might all offer varying levels of unity for purging so you'll need to decide if you want the effect or the unity more.

The only reason I could see 'Neutering' still being an option, is if your people were sadists and wanted to crush their spirits and watch them suffer.

Nazis weren't exactly fanatical purifiers because to fanatical purifiers there are no-one between ubermenschen or untermenschen. You're either a person (their species) or not (anyone else) and if you aren't then they'll purge you.
Not entirely true. The problem was that nazis were waging war against the same species and as such had to compromise, since there is no entirely "pure" members of the same race. When you wage the war against the other species, interbreeding is not possible, hence comes the straight line between ubermenchen and untermenchen. So I don't see any problem saying that Fanatical Purifiers are space nazi.

Yeah, that's why you cook'em to a nice char finish at the stake first though. Gets rid of all those xeno parasites and diseases. Plus, gives 'em a nice smokey flavor too! :D

Sure, my point stands though that I cannot imagine Fanatical Purifiers allowing the aliens in their midst to simply die of old age.

You mean let them work as slaves until their death or, like, take on jobs and live out their lives? :eek:

At any rate I don't think you need to worry about angry neighbours as a Purifier.

The correct way to reduce the number of angry neighbours is not to make them any less angry by showing restraint, the proper way would be to actively remove them.
That way you don't selfishly seek to just get them off your back, instead you make the galaxy a better place for everyone. ;)

…How do fanatic purifiers feel about robots?

Like I have this visual of turning planet after planet into a tomb world with Armageddon bombardment and then using robots to colonize them. *chuckle*

At least until they develop that tech that they can raise those worlds to acceptable living conditions for their species, at which point they can start disassembling and colonizing with their own pops.

I'm actually not sure. I get the feeling that it will be similar to the current game; your robots are fine, but other species' robots are not.

There are other Civics which have clauses forbidding other certain civics (including Fanatic Purifiers forbidding Syncretic Evolution) and there are other civics expressly forbidding AI (Hive Mind/Spiritualist). If Fanatical Purifiers fundamentally didn't work with robots then I would figure they would add these effects to the FP lineup.

Unfortunately, because you need to be Fanatic Xenophobe and Militarist, you won't be able to fit Mechanist into your lineup. A Mechanist Fanatic Purifiers civ would probably be really good as the early game boost will really help you start steamrolling, which is the current main weakness of Fanatic Purifiers.

I'm actually not sure. I get the feeling that it will be similar to the current game; your robots are fine, but other species' robots are not.

There are other Civics which have clauses forbidding other certain civics (including Fanatic Purifiers forbidding Syncretic Evolution) and there are other civics expressly forbidding AI (Hive Mind/Spiritualist). If Fanatical Purifiers fundamentally didn't work with robots then I would figure they would add these effects to the FP lineup.

Unfortunately, because you need to be Fanatic Xenophobe and Militarist, you won't be able to fit Mechanist into your lineup. A Mechanist Fanatic Purifiers civ would probably be really good as the early game boost will really help you start steamrolling, which is the current main weakness of Fanatic Purifiers.
I imagine a Purifier might tolerate use of robots but I don't see them allowing sentient robots to run around free.

For that matter I don't think they'd be very happy about the very idea of a sentient machine at all. Although I suppose they could just reason that it only thinks it's sentient even though it most definitely is not. That would still make the notion of AI freedom an absurdity, however.

I don't know if I think I quite see it that way. I think you can roleplay it either way. Especially worth keeping in mind that an entirely synthetic empire will ALSO be able to get the Fanatical Purifiers trait, or a Fanatical Purifiers empire might be able to obtain mechanical ascendance, or be created from a mechanically ascendant empire switching ethics.

Now that I think about it, it seems as though you *could* get Fanatical Purifiers and Mechanist in a round-about way. Start the game as Materialist/Xenophobe/Militarist, Mechanist/X, promote the Xenophobe faction while Materialist is low, then reform into Fanatical Purifiers. Your Mechanist civic will deactivate, but that doesn't matter as you've already got the benefit.

If the race in question is in fact the Synthetics then whether they have AI freedom ought to be a foregone conclusion. It'd be mighty strange for them to enslave themselves to themselves.

If organic Purifiers choose to become machines themselves then other races and artificial AIs are still in need of purging. If they themselves have become machines then they most certainly no longer would want sentient artificial machines around.

I'm going to be using nutering, personally. My purifiers are fanatic in the sense that they see everything else as meaningless beings that will eventually pass away as they expand, basically other xenos being so insignificant that it isn't even worth their time killing them unless they rebel, so long as they ensure they cannot propigate.
