Recent fun with EU3 and Rome:VV has caused me to dust off my old copy of Victoria (the original game, not the expansion). Is there any reason not to get the most recent patch (1.4)? If so, which one is recomended?

I don't see any reason not to go for 1.4. Actually, if you have any cash to spare go for Revolutions + OHGamer's hotfixes, it really makes a difference.

Thanks. I downloaded 1.4. Regarding Vicky Revolutions, I think I need to make a decision first - how best to deploy my limited game playing time. HTTT, Rome-VV which I just bought, or Vicky. If I'm going to be playing the other 2, even the small investment in Revolutions should probably be deferred.

It's a bit harder to make a profit initially with 1.4, especially with the smaller countries. You'll find it best to work on building up your industrial techs such as clean coal and cheap steel along with your railroad infrastructure to help maximize your RGO exports before trying to industrialize.

At least that was my take on my brief stint with playing 1.4

I jumped from 1.4 to Revolutions pretty quickly myself.

Thanks. I started (and went up to 1852) as Brazil before I read your advice. I used the "research culture to become a great power" strategy; it worked fine, and I built my first factory in 1852. But I'll probably slow down industrialization a bit & follow your advice to increase profitiability.

I can see though why Brazil is such a nice choice for a first timer (though strictly speaking I'm not first timer, but I forgot everything I learned when I played the game obsessively when it first came out).

I'm still undecided about which game for focus on for the moment, though. Especially now that the demo for HTTT has been released.

Fair enough. Add to that Vicky 2 coming out next year, and I can understand not wanting to get too many games you might not play that often. If you do find yourself hooked on Vicky though, I strongly recommend the expansion. The changes to capitalists and colonies on their own really improve play. It does put an end to minor powers becoming cultural prestige powerhouses though, which is a good thing that's kind of annoying (and probably ends your Brazil strategy).

So far the last couple days I haven't had much time to play, but what little time I do have has been devoted to Vicki. I'm enjoying it; it's definitely a deeper game than Rome or EU3, though I've bearly scratched the surface so far. I've only played Brazil so far, to 1900 (the short time frame is probably on balance a good thing; I think I've literally never completed an EU3 game). I'm not doing quite as well as I usually do in these types of games, only 14th ranked nation (I stopped playing the cultural strategy after I briefly was a great power). I'm surprised at how slow industrialization has been; heck, I'm even a little behind Argentina! But as usual, more play will lead to better play.

(Of course I played many hours of Vicki when it first came out, but I have almost no memory of the game. Getting old, I guess.)

As for Revolutions, I'm a little put off by the capitalist mechanic. Realistic, of course, but I hate giving up that kind of control in games like this. But I am persuadable otherwise.
