Belgium and the Netherlands certainly fit as "close to the UK", but they are not at all close to the US. Given the most popular nations, Brazil/Mexico seem more likely than Belgium.
With the Netherlands named as one the question is really Belgium or Mexico/Brazil.

Definitely NOT Brazil. More like Mexico and Belgium. Maybe an extra 3rd tiny tree for Luxembourg. Haha, now that I think of it, anniversary update should have Luxembourg tree. That would be adorable!

I just noticed that a lot of people including myself seem to be assuming that there are only two new nations entering the focus club this time. Do we know this for certain? Did the devs explicitly say so? I don't recall where I got this impression.

yes that has been stated repeatedly. But I think Norway will come with a Scandinavia focus tree. Also Podcat said on the Paradox event that it will be something on either side, which I thought for a long time could also mean ideologies but most people think its geography making Mexico by far the most likely candidate.

I suspect mexico to be the next one.
1) neighbor of USA (just as Netherlands is to Britain)
2) would play a huge role if USA goes down the civil war path
3) could make playing in the Americas more fun
4) don't know how the navy of mexico was during the war, but it could definitely play a role helping USA to protect its shores

Why not Spain/Portugal -> it will get its own DLC probably
Why not Italy/France -> they said it would be a minor nation
Why not Norway -> I think they will put it in a Scandinavia/USSR DLC
Why not Greece/Turkey -> probably will be done in a Mediterranean DLC
Why not Belgium -> I suspect they will put Belgium together with an updated France in another DLC

PDX have said they wanted to give more focus trees to these countries, but they must fit the general theme of the DLC. The other countries will get one eventually, but with not in this DLC but in their own.

My guesses:

-Mexico as the last tree in MtG.

-A great DLC with rework of Italy and France, trees for Spain and Portugal, and maybe espionage mechanics.

-A great DLC with rework of USSR and Poland, and trees for Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria.

-A DLC with trees for Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark.

-A DLC with trees for Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru and Colombia

I would answer The Netherlands, but as they are featured in the next update (yay!), there is room for other nations.

I would make a split between historical and alternative history, as both can be interesting, but for different purposes. My list;

Historical (mainly because it would add towards the ''historical game''):
- Spain (both historical and alternative).
- Sweden / Scandinavia

Alternative
- Turkey (maybe create a new ottoman empire?)
- Ehtiopia (African Union with the new releasable nations?)
- Brazil/argentina (to make South America more interesting)
- Iran

The emphasis in Man the Guns is on naval warfare and democracies. Norway is much more capable of playing into this theme than Mexico which is not a democracy and has no significant navy to speak of. Parts of the Norwegian coast were heavily mined as well, and mines are a new feature. Governments in exile are getting new mechanics, another check for Norway.

The only reason I've seen for expecting that it's Mexico is that it's a neighbor of the US, which by itself seems to me a rather poor reason to give it a focus tree while there are so many other nations that still need one.

If any country in Latin America ought to get a focus tree, the first one should be Brazil. But I still don't see how Brazil would fully fit the theme of this DLC.

It's got to be either Belgium or Mexico now, I would put my money on Belgium.
Belgium because they had tanks, and UK and US already have complete tank tree as sprites and lots of planes, NL only had unique ships and planes so not too much to go with and Mexico basically had neither tanks nor planes of its own for 3D sprites. So I would say not Mexico from the workload perspective, because otherwise 3D artists would be a bit out of work (unless we get 3D art for mountain troops or Marines or something cool like this...)

Or Venezuela. Last diary was much about that country.

But it would be also Mexico or Belgium. If there will be not Belgium in this DLC, map of country which has trees look strange. Middle is big black hole.

Any country other than Belgium would be good. It would be a bummer if both minors were countries that spend the entire war under occupation, and unlike the Netherlands, Belgium doesn't even have extensive overseas holding or much of a navy of any kind.

Mexico, done right, could be interesting. It has the power to be a kingmaker if there is a civil war in the US, not to mention that newly revealed mechanic of countries being able to own the resources of foreign states could play a role vis-a-vis the whole oil nationalization crisis in 1938. There is plenty of setup for fun alt-history given the power struggle between President Cardenas and former President Calles. Historically the latter was exiled and his supporters purged kind of early in 1936, but what if it had gone the other way?

If the second minor is going to be a country in the Americas, it won't be Brazil. I think Brazil is a good candidate for new content, but the issue is that it would be pretty sterile without, at the bare minimum, Argentina also getting new content. Mexico, in contrast, doesn't really need any additional content added to other countries in Latin America to be fun.

That's also the issue in Europe. I think Norway would probably be a better candidate than either Belgium or Mexico, but that also runs into the same issue as Brazil: unless content for Norway is developed alongside content for the other Scandinavians, it probably won't turn out that well, so it's probably safe to count out Norway.

Don't get me wrong, content for Belgium would be good, but in practice it would probably just play as a less interesting, less flexible Netherlands with the same issue of being occupied the entire war in any even semi-historical campaign. It would just offer a very similar gameplay experience. I think offering a diversity of options and varied gameplay experience is more important than doubling up on countries that would play mostly the same. This is a problem that DoD suffered from in my opinion, and potentially, any future 'country pack' with the Sweden-Denmark-Norway trinity. The only problem about not getting Belgium now is that we will probably never get it if we don't get it with this expansion.

For the last MtG tree, I think Mexico or Belgium is most likely. Venezuela and Brazil are dark horse candidates, Portugal even more so. I just hope it isn't Belgium, since Iskulya's right about their position being too similar for this expansion.

More broadly, I want to see Spain. Done right, the civil war and the chance to change the balance of WWII will make Spain easily the most interesting and dynamic country in the game. That said, if it's not done right...

After Spain, I'd like to see Iran and Finland, followed by Brazil, Portugal, and Sweden, and then Turkey, Greece, and the other Nordics.

IMO, a rework of Italian, Soviet and French focus tree is more important than the dutch one. Usa, Germany, GB and Japan got new NF. Then there are three majors neglected (France, Italy, URSS). New trees are welcome, Turkey & Spain would be interesting. But considering in SP almost no one play Netherlands I don't understand why reworking the majors tree is not a priority.

They want to have focus trees for all nations but they also need a selling point, so selling the not so popular Netherlands with the alt-history UK and US is just smart marketing. The other aspect is that to do France and SU properly you need sub ideologies. Since those are not part of this DLC/Patch it wouldn't really make sense to include them.

I mean nobody played Netherlands so far because there were no government in exile mechanics, democracies weren't too interesting to play with. With the new NF and new mechanics I can imagine quite a few people opting for the Netherlands.

With the Netherlands named as one the question is really Belgium or Mexico/Brazil.

Pretty sure the devs ruled out anything in South America and Scandinavia at this time.

And I don't see how you could possibly do Belgium without a rework of France. They are tied at the hip in so many ways.

No opinion on Mexico, although others have listed many good reasons for them.

People keep ignoring the one and only US puppet who was promised independence during the game scale, the Philippines. Who fought alongside the US vs the Japanese and who fought a savage war against the occupying Japanese.

Just saying....
