Another cool nation to play is Mali. You are rich and your neighbors are weak, plus they have some halfway decent national ideas. The Europeans can be tricky once they arrive, but if you manage to stay on time with Mil tech they are fairly easy to take land from and they will colonize for you. Take colonization and head north to replace Morocco, or head west and spread Islam to the new world.
