Which mod is the best all round??

I'm a complete newbie at HOI2DD.

Ive been reading the various mods and they all seem to have some advantages and disadvantages but basially I cant really tell which ones are best without trying them all and to be honest I just cant be bothered to mess with the game that much. So I dont know whether to apply any or not.

Let me tell you what I would like. First off I like the historical nature of HOI and want to play as historically as possible. Secondly I like the general nature of the vanilla game but am aware I just dont know it well enough to make a view on its shortcomings if any. Thirdly and mainly I dont like the graphic icons. Theyre the only thing I realy dont like. I prefer the animated men etc to the counters. But the counters show stacks quite well. The animated men and planes are especially bad though in 2056x1024 res. Some of the planes barely seem to look like planes!

Can anyone recommend a very good mod that encompasses a lot of great changes but doesnt alter the gameplay in a bad way ie breaks something and also can anyone recommend any graphic mods to the icons. I dont need anything else just the icons changed.

Any help much appreciated.

Icons = SKIF
MOD = Alternate history: Kaiserreich; All the Russias but I'm biased. Non alternate history: Mod 33 (it changes icons by itself, but they are not that good in my opinion); Mod 34.

Well if you want a historical game, you have to try the compendium or the GC-wif mod. For the gfx, i recommend you the SKIF and the GIP.

SKIP and GIP for graphics should be my pick as well. As to mods themselves that really depends on what you're looking for, really. the major ones are CORE, HSR, TRP and Mod33/34, while Compendium is a mixture of existing mods really. HSR focuses on Germany first and foremost, the others are covering the world AFAIK (CORE definately is). TRP as of now has the most challenging AI (which we probably will migrate to in the next version of CORE), and as to actual historical accuracy I would suggest both CORE and mod33/34, though the latter is based on hearsay as I haven't tried it myself as of yet. But as mods are highly dependent on your actual taste I would suggest trying several of them to get a general impression...

I've been playing Mod34 for a few weeks now and love it. The tech tree is very encompassing and the events are great. I play with counters and have deleted my sprites so I don't know how the icons look but the mod is definitely worth trying.

I'm a big fan of Kaiserreich, but I do really like "what if?" scenarios, so that may not be your cup of tea.

Mod33 is all around great. It seems to me to be a lot more versatile than vanilla, since you can create a bunch of different scenarios through event. (Re-creation of Austria-Hungary, communist germany, tsarist russia, etc.)

No not really - I tried a few but in the end am playing a game modded with a few small separate graphical updates only - for the various sprites and background screens. I didnt find a generic overall mod that I really liked. I didnt want to mod the operation of the game itself before trying it in vanilla mode first.

I'm now playing through the Spanish civil war scenario and greatly enjoying it mainly because I am winning. But on reading the history of the actual war my game doesnt seem very realistic at all. The Republicans are far too strong.

I just recently installed CORE; it seems like a great mod, but I would like a better/more clear look-especially on the techs pages. I noticed that SKIF is compatable with CORE, but what about SEMP?
