Decisions, decisions. I like how there are actual options, but it's hard to decide :)

Piloting I -> can't decide between Warden and Marquis. Marquis has mobility + nice buffs, but Warden can reach ridiciolous damage output with Arc mods = 40 dmg + 50% jump dmg with Arc Extension and stun effect with Stun Module. Plus Wardens Banner for some extra AoE (and it has a really good range). And in terms of buffs you can add the Destiny's Manuscript mod.
Piloting II -> Paladin has mobility, but Blackguard Tyrant looks awesome and can do ridiciolous amounts of damage with Entropy mods.

paladin with a stack of paladin units is godly. give it t3 mods and autobattle everything.
else ill go with marquis. for its buff but also its long range arc AOE attack which is super strong with the T3 stun mod.

For the beginning i like the marquis, because it can hit flying and ground units at the same time, my hero also got the trait that he can shoot again if he kills. The warden jumping attack is nice but you can get wardens so easily that the marquis is a better option plus it has debuff removal.
The Blacktyrannt seems like a better options to me. The huge aoe you smack at the enemy also heals you to full in almost any battle, also hero's make better use of it then the normal unit itself because of first strike and so on. The paladin unit also has this kind of stuff on its on, so the paladin is already a good unit without the hero inside and because i tend to get the tyrannt before i reseach the paladin this is my advanced battle suit (at least for close combat characters, xenoplaque and psynumbra)

Tyrant is good but you need to get it. The Paladin has the advantage of been more easy to come, and replicable for you other heroes :)

The Marquis. Only use a Champion in a Champion ball or someone who REALLY needs to be flying on their own.

The Marquis' Banner is an immediate aoe heal AND cleanse, into a heal every turn. It's the old APC Repair Drone with added heal/Cleanse at start up.

There are three factions where I REALLY REALLY want their racial vehicle, Syndi, Shakarn, and Oathbound. For all three of them the vehicle is a change of capability in a way none of the other faction vehicles are. Early game the Marquis is a big enabler that makes early fights vastly easier than anything else a hero could be bringing. Mid Game the Marquis is STILL that. The Banner of Healing Tac Op is similar to the Marquis' Banner, but it doesn't have the cleanse. So outside of Secret Tech, the Marquis is pretty much your ONLY Cleanse as the Oathbound.

Warden is like the worst unit in the Oathbound lineup. By the time you get the mods that make it good you have Champions already. Marquis is like the Oathbound version of APC which adds new capabilities previously unavailable.

Tyrant is better unless you have a full flying army for strategical mobility.

I usally dont go down the unit tech tree early, cause i don't have the time to produce them. The mod tech tree or the secret tech tree is my main focus early depends what i play.

Piloting I -> can't decide between Warden and Marquis.
The Warden is utterly useless. It is a token-ranged unit in a purely melee faction. A melee faction that can punch air units. And the Banner is entirely random with no way to stack the odds, given it's extreme range.
I would not be caught with on in my stack if they are free. If I want ranged, there is at least 1 NPC faction I can get stuff from. Or the empire Renown System. Or the Augur.

Piloting II -> Paladin has mobility, but Blackguard Tyrant looks awesome and can do ridiciolous amounts of damage with Entropy mods.
For maximum effect from Embolden, the Paladin would have to be acompanied by T1 and T2 units only. Pretty okay early game, but once you get T3 ready to produce you really want to to get something else.

You could probably get good use out of a Warden with Arc Extension and either Arc Impact or Stun. There's also a doctrine that allows you to choose the targets of banners.

Probably wouldn't recommend putting a hero in one, though.

Wardens actually get silly high damage with damage mods owing to that 20 base arc damage. Arc Extension and Stun takes them up to 32 for instance. Tossing any other big damage mod on them from there takes them to truly stupendous heights for a T2 unit.

Well I reached around 40 dmg with Warden in first mission of Oathbound campaign. Still doesn't hold up to 55+ damage of Tyrant, but it does its part :p I actually picked Marquis over Warden at the end of 1st campaign mission and actually I'm a bit disappointed with it. The buffs might be useful, but at the end of the day higher damage output is simply more utilizible. I don't know, maybe it's my style of play, I always prefer direct damage over abilities manipulating the battlefield...

Well, I did pick Tyrant for my second hero in 2nd mission and he is a beast. I already mentioned he does 55+ dmg on his main attack and with Instill Anarchy not only he does AoE, but he also self heals. Add to the fact he has 100 health and 6 armor on both shields (+ Stagger Immunity) and... you kinda can get the picture. He won't win battles on his own, but he is pretty close :p Btw I wonder why Triumph didn't decide to make an Exemplar into a battesuit for heroes...
