I agree wholeheartedly, I was trying to say that for much of England and France's history (within the years I quoted) they could hardly be considered nations.

Again, I agree... certainly possible. The Byzantines certainly could have gone much farther, but there were many problems that would have to have been dealt with regardless of the Fourth Crusade. And I think it highly unlikely they could have survived to the modern day in any recognizable state. (China, for instance, has only survived the millennia because of it's sheer size, relative cultural harmony, and innumerous reinventions.)
