They outlasted the Western Empire by nearly a thousand years.... it was certainly the one of the longest living European empires. By comparison: the (Western) Roman Empire lasted about five hundred years. (A thousand if you count the preceding republic, twelve-hundred if you add the previous monarchy, and over two thousand if you add on the Byzantines.)
