Which Download Service is Most Like Having the Box?

I've never bought a full Paradox game from Steam, Impulse, or Gamer's Gate, just expansions.

I know that Steam games usually require it to be running at all times and you must buy everything from Steam from that point on.

What about the other services?

Which is most like just having a boxed version? I mod Paradox games extensively and this usually clashes with Steam. I also want to able to use beta patches, assuming this game has them down the road.

The boxed versions aren't available until August 22 at most places I've looked so I was willing to buy the digital, but I don't want to be bound to some form of copy protection or limited in what I can patch with and mod.

Gamersgate. No additional programs to install, reinstall / redownload whenever you want as many times you want, easy to install several copies for modding purposes...

And you can burn the install files to a dvd and put it in a box if you like

I was a firm "give me a DVD" person. Gamer's Gate has cured me of that.
