think ill go for japan 36 to try it out, has the advantages of a short time to build up until the marco polo event, and then a long war to get to know the engine and all

Italy. I am an Italian-American and if I'm not playing as Germany I usually try to take on the world as Italy.

I'll edit out the most infamous of the historical Nazi leaders, install my favorite alt history German HoS, and then play Germany for eons. I have enjoyed an occasional game as Italy or Romania but quickly get bored and have to go back to Deutschland.
Probably Spain with the civil war just to start off with and then a bit of peace until the war hits me. After getting a feel for the new features I'll take on the world with a major power and then I just have to try and conquer Africa, South America and Australasia with South Africa! Yes.... I know... They start off with 3 GAR, couple of transports and one research slot... What a challenge!
Denmark. - Good for learning. Then Japan Or Germany nad Japan and Japan and... (I like naval warfare. I want to win Midway this time. ). Or if the AI theater feature is OK and India is finally an puppet then UK. Then if it seems possible on Normal to survive with Italy, or Hungary. Finally world conquest with Brazil if a doomsday like extension pack arrives. (In my current game it is 1952 and Brazil is part of commintern, owns whole south america, Japan pacific, and indochina up till the line of Shanghai and prepares to the WWIII)
i would seek my first defeat, as Germany.

the more difficult will the game be the better
I seek a challenging game as Germany and hope that difficulty levels will not be as in HoI2 determined by IC/resource/manpower etc bonus

Germany first, and easy start to learn the new rules. The UK, Soviet and USA are just too way easy.
Then maybe Italy (or Spain) for a more challenging game. Goal: to become a bigger threat than Germany.
Then Japan for an almost impossible game. Goal: To kick US ass.
Then Communist Sweden, just a fun game with some fun options. Help the fins? No, reconquer them!
Other options such as South America are not that fun until the expansion. France is a bit of a challenge, but after resisting the German invasion the game is pretty much over. Mexico might be an option, but depends on the how the game rules turns out and what options you have for allies.

1 - Spain to get use to a good early war and managing a moderate sized country. It should also be good to watch how the worl war goes and then join in on either side when the time is right.
