Ummm... Spain? In my first game (admittedly beginning with 'Easy' setting and 1.05b) I rule most of the americas, Iberia and major parts of France, the Netherlands, the Mediterreanean (except Ottomans), Half the Arabic peninsula, India, SEAsia, China and Japan. If I had hacked so that I could've annexed majors, it wouldn't have been a problem. France and Britain are easy for me. Austria, Hungary and Poland are my close allies, so I probably could've bribed them.
Spain has the upper hand in most respects in the 1500s, and can build a magnificent colonial empire then. They get problems later on, when the colonists and commanders dwindle... not that that bothered me at the time, I was way ahead of everyone in tech (finished the tree in early 1600s). Some problems arose when the other powers started to catch up, but I had near unlimited resources, gaining about a 1000 ducats/month. Of course, there's plenty of land to defend.
