Hi everyone,

In my latest game I've been playing Germany, and it's now April 1943. The SU was slain long ago, ending with the Bitter Peace event. Likewise, Japan and I have finished off Great Britain, who holds on to random provinces around the world but who appears to have 0 IC at this point. In preparation for some future invasion of North America, a few months back (game time), I decided to try a new tactic (for me) - switching to the Base Strike doctrine.

As many of you have already learned, it's not an easy pathway with Germany's tech teams. Between the starting Base Strike doctrine and 1943's Massive Strike doctrine lie a total of 9 technologies. With 5 'pieces' per technology, that's 9*5=45 'pieces' total. Neither Raeder nor Donitz have the carrier tactics competency or the large task force tactics competency, and these comprise a whopping 14 out of the 45 'pieces'.

In HOI III, countries can gain greater competency by doing earlier research in a field and building the appropriate types of units. Obviously, we don't have that yet in HOI II. Does anyone out there feel like it would be fair to eventually grant oneself new tech capability as Germany after you've fielded say 4-5 carriers and have already researched some of the early Base Strike techs? If so, would you add a competency to one of the existing tech teams (Raeder would probably make the most sense), or would you add a new tech team with modest skills (mimicking the competency set of one of the American admirals but with an overall lower score of 4 or 5)?

Also, could anyone point me to a thread that would show me how to add a competency to an existing tech team and/or add an entirely new tech team?

Thanks for your thoughts and help!

Postscript - Sorry for having accidentally posted this same question in the non-Doomsday HoI2 forum. I'm not sure if that gets many readers any more, so I hope the moderators and others won't mind me posting again here...

Blueprints act like specialisation. If can match a high skill team with 1 or 2 specializations then itll be plenty fast enough. Mulptiple slots researching at once and it goes along fine.

When I play Germany and want Carrier doctrines, I'll ally with Japan; they're usually nice enough to give me their naval blueprints. Unless you need those doctrines before they're in the Axis.

You can also try stealing the blueprints from the USA. Although they'll consistantly be slightly ahead of you since they have better tech teams so (once you've caught up) there will be a slight lag between them getting a tech and you catching it up.

I have several different DB game files to give me the game I want. Do you use tech team takeover ? If so mod denmarks teams and you can research as you like. Go to program files, Paradox ,HOI , then click DB. Click tech teams then pick the country you want . There are up to 5 skills per team just make notes on the team you like then mod the other team to match. write down the skills that admiral King [ USA ] has and change the other team to the same.

I don't think modding the Tech teams file works on a save, as tech teams are in the save file.

You could edit your save file, take one of America's or Japan's teams, copy them, change the name and picture, and use that one.

I added a "german naval academy" (Murwik?) team to my games. I took yamamoto, put donitz picture on it, changed the tech ID number to something huge, and then reduced skill to 4. You can add a later start date to make it more realistic (say, 1942 after carriers were proven the rulers of the sea) if you want. By that point there would be no reason why a victorious germany wouldnt start building a large carrier fleet.

Alternatively you could add a new branch of techs to the sealane inderdiction path that let the germans get 2-3 more carrier doctrines, but thats a bit harder and its hard to find positions on the naval doctrine window that have space available for a new tree.

I also added Minoru Genda as a tech team for japan to replace yamamoto in case he was assassinated, who has the same specializations but skill 7.
