I usually like Obsidian games but I haven't picked up this one because what I've read from reviews hasn't given me any sense of motivation for the protagonist. Most stories are about the protagonist seeking vengeance or redemption or trying to save someone or preserve something. I'm not getting a sense of what's going to make me care about the protagonist or the world he inhabits. Is the appeal just the novelty of not playing a heroic character? Cause if that's it, I think I'll pass on this one.

I felt invested in the raise to power of my character, much more than with the standard "let´s free the world from XYZ". Then again I guess it depends on the number of games you have under your belt. If you´re an old timer, Tyranny´s take on the genre feels refreshing.

As you play you gain notoriety and it's sort of like creating a legend or saga. As red4scare said I as well feel driven by raising my character's power and influence while judging events and interpreting the law of the land as fair as I can.

The motivation without giving too much spoiler is :
act 1) Solve the issue in the first area (conquer or die)
act 2) Increase your power
act 3) Impose your power
(at least it was for the motivation that transpired)

Those are the motivations, not vengeance, redemption or preserving someone/something.
Those are a byproduct of the 3 points above.
And those motivations felt very good at the end of act 2. I was jubilant. (only to cry when I saw what act 3 actions were :( )

As 10000hp said, what you do is creating the legend of your character by taking meaningfull choices to get you to power.
And the choices are most of the time far away from the classic good/neutral/not so evil one.
It's more about fair and unfair choices to tell the thruth, which is something so far unique in a RPG.

And I really had the impression that I had impact on the world with character reacting and speaking about what I did and my choices.
So much that after I ended the game during the week-end I started a new game to take another path (and a higher difficulty).
I really wish that the feeling I have is true but I will have to check by playing this new time.

For me the emotional hook is essentially, "My character is trying to make a living as a leader in an immensely powerful regime without becoming a total monster." I like a lot of my companions so far, too, but I can't help but feel emotionally torn when I'm unsuccessfully trying to talk a rebel leader out of making a stupid decision that is going to end in a lot of death. I had to kill her, but I didn't enjoy it. There are a lot of emotionally fraught scenes like this one for me so far.
